"Family Notices" Western Herald (Bourke, NSW : 1887 - 1970) 9 September 1903
DEATH OF MR. C. McARTHUR KING
(BY TELEGRAPH.)
Sydney, September 8.
Mr. Charles McArthur King, late Resident Magistrate at Norfolk Island, and formerly Police Magistrate at Bourke is dead. He was 79 years of age.
The cause of Mr. King's death was, no doubt, the shock consequent upon having had one of his legs amputated in Carisbrook Private Hospital about a week ago. It appears that whilst visiting some friends in Queensland recently, Mr. King was troubled with a corn, which subsequently became very much inflamed. It became worse, and Mr. King returned to Sydney, entering the private hospital under advice from his medical advisors, Notwithstanding the attention he received, it became necessary to amputate the leg owing to dangerous symptoms setting in. To a man of his ripe age the shock was very severe, and death has unfortunately resulted.
Charles Macarthur King, was a grandson of Governor King of New South Wales, and was born in this State in 1824. For many years he was actively engaged in pastoral pursuits, and, during the seventies, managed the famous Muntham estate in Victoria for the late Edward Henty. About 1880 Mr. King returned to New South Wales, and was in 1886 appointed Police Magistrate and Mining Warden at Milparinka. In 1888 Mr. King was appointed P.M. in Bourke, which position he held until September, 1896, when he was retired, being succeeded by Mr. Corbett Lawson. Mr. King, however, was retained on the Local Land Board until the early part of 1899, when he received the appointment of Resident Magistrate, or Governor of Norfolk Island, for which place he left New South Wales about the beginning of April. This was an exceedingly appropriate appointment, as his grandfather had at one time governed the Island, and his father was born there. It is only very recently that Mr. King resigned from the position and returned to New South Wales, and his many friends throughout the States will sincerely regret his very sad death. Mr. King had left a family of five sons and two daughters, to mourn their great bereavement, and very general and sincere sympathy is extended to them.

Charles' obituary stated as follows[4]:

The funeral of the late Mr Charles Macarthur King, a gentleman that had been for a great number of years prominently identified with the public life of this state, took place on Saturday at St Mary's. Mr Macarthur King held many positions of trust, but perhaps the most important of all was his office as Resident Magistrate at Norfolk Island, where his talents as an administrator were most usefully employed. There was a peculiar fitness in Mr Macarthur King being appointed Chief Magistrate of Norfolk Island. In 1788 his grandfather, Lieutenant (afterwards Admiral) Philip King, was commissioned by Captain Phillip who was in command of H.M.S. Sirius, to settle Norfolk Island. The Hon P. G. King, M.L.C. of Double Bay, is a brother of the deceased gentleman, who left five sons, one of whom (Mr Philip Parker King) is manager of the National Bank at Fremantle, Western Australia. Mr. Macarthur King was born at Greenwich, England, in 1824, and came to Sydney when two years old. After occupying himself with pastoral pursuits for some years he was interested in a whaling venture, but after a couple of years in this latter enterprise he accepted a position in the public service of this State and, with one or two short periods during which he again engaged himself in pastoral matters, he remained in that service, occupying the position of police magistrate at Bourke and elsewhere. The deceased gentleman was appointed Resident Magistrate of Norfolk Island in 1889 and retained the position until early this year A few days ago he had one leg amputated.
The funeral, as already stated, took place at St Mary's, the service being conducted by the vicar, the Rev Mr Harris, assisted by the Rev F. Elder. Messrs Beecroft and Garner acted as bearers. Wreaths were sent by Mrs Brothers and Mrs Nobbs, Lieutenant Goldfinch and family, Mr J. K. Lethbridge King and family, Mr G. B. G. King and family, Mr. J. K. Lethbridge, Mr F. L. King (Ashfield), Mrs A. King and family (Madford, Victoria), and the residents of Tregear. Although the funeral was of a semi-private character, the deceased gentleman was held in such general esteem that a large number of persons attended.
