Thomas William King was born in Deptford, Kent, England, he was the son of Thomas King and Martha Sayers. On his army papers he gave his date of birth as 21 December 1890, but his actual birth was registered in the March quarter of 1890, and was 21 December 1889 [1]
Thomas was baptised in Deptford on 28 September 1892, and his actual date of birth was entered in the register [2]

Thomas emigrated to Canada in 1907. He was a passenger on board the ship Kensington, which sailed from Liverpool on 28 March 1907, and arrived in Portland, Maine on 10 April 1907. He gave his full name as Thomas William King, age 18, a farmer, born in Greenwich, his final destination was Montreal, and he had paid for the voyage himself. He may have been travelling with William Ernest Payne, who was also going to Montreal. [5]

The next reference we have of Thomas is on 29 January 1916, when he enlisted with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His army attestation papers show his date of birth as 21 December 1890 and his place of birth as Greenwich. Thomas King, of 116 Grove Street, Deptford, England (his father) is given as his next of kin. Thomas also mentioned that he had served previously in the West Kent Militia. He was assigned to the 108th O/S Battalion, and given a regimental number of 721744 and a rank of private. His military training was carried out at Camp Hughes, Manitoba [7], and whilst there Thomas was promoted to Corporal. The harsh military training must have taken it's toll on Thomas's health, as he was declared medically unfit on 20 July 1916, and discharged from the army. The army doctors had detected that he had a mitral regurgitation murmur (where one of his heart valves didn't close properly), and he experienced shortness of breath on exertion. They attributed this to rheumatism. [8]
Thomas married Violet Irene Hetherington, sometime before the 1921 census. The census showed Thomas, age 29 and a driver; with Violet and their young daughter Myrtle, age 5 moths, living in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

Thomas King | M | 29 | Head | Married | England | Driver |

In 1926, when the next census was taken, Thomas and Violet were still living in Saskatoon. Thomas was aged 33, Violet was aged 25, and they had children Myrtle 5, Violet 4, Edith 2 and Mary 11 months. [10]
Thomas died on 23 August 1932 in Saskatoon, and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery [11]
