Biography

Thomas was born in 7 Mar 1853 as Thomas Rubley Kench at Leicester Forest East. He was the second illegitimate son of Ann Kinch or Kench. Middle name Rubley suggests his father was Samuel Rubley, also father to his brother Samuel Kinch. He worked as a Porter for the Midland Railway Company and moved to Nottingham in the 1870s.

He married Agnes Wilson on 6 August 1877 at St Andrews, Nottingham and they had 11 children.

In 1915 he suffered a serious accident and lost a leg after it was crushed during shunting operations at the Midland Station. After that he does not appear to have been able to work and 3 years later he took his own life. This was reported in the newspaper:

Nottingham Man’s Suicide Since losing a leg in an accident 3 years ago, Thomas Kinch (65) of Lower Eldon Street, Nottingham, had not been able to work and had lately worried over that fact. After a talk with his wife, who tried to cheer him up, he went into the cellar, where he was subsequently found to have cut his throat. A verdict of “Suicide while of unsound mind” was returned at the inquest yesterday.

Kinch-331 and Kench-74 appear to represent the same person because: These are both my great grandfather. He was born Thomas Rubley Kench in 1853 but later used the name Thomas Kinch. He married Agnes Wilson in 1877 in Nottingham and had 11 children including Horace and my grandfather Charles.
