Biography

Edward Kearney was born in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland in 1830. His Roman Catholic baptism appears on 7th March 1830, in Kingstown parish, County Dublin. Catholic baptisms in Ireland were rarely more than two or three days after birth, giving a likely birth date of March 1830. He was the youngest of seven children born to Peter Kearney and Elizabeth (Murphy) Kearney of Shankill.

Edward Kearney migrated from Ireland to United States.

He married Julia from Ireland, but no marriage record is found. They had three children together, and possibly a fourth.

Edward appears in the US Census for 1860 and 1870, in Greensville, Virginia, with his wife Julia. Their daughter Kate Kearney was born in North Carolina in January 1865, but they were back in Virginia for the birth of their son Edward Kearney about 1868, and both children appear with them in the US Census in Virginia in 1870.

No date of death appears for his mother Elizabeth (Murphy) Kearney. She probably passed away before the introduction of civil death registrations in 1864. His father Peter Kearney passed away a widower, age 82, in Shankill, County Dublin, Ireland in 1870, when Edward was age 39.

Edward Kearney passed away age 40 from tuberculosis, in Greensville, Virginia, United States in 1870. His wife Julia married again two years later in 1872 to Elander Buck from New York. She passed away in December 1902 in Texas, United States.

Research Notes

Edward Kearney was married to Julia from Ireland, but no marriage record appears, and her last name at birth is unmentioned on any source here, and is so far unknown. An Edward Kearney married to a Julia White in Kentucky in 1859 has been discounted, due to the births of subsequent children to them in Kentucky.

Edward may have had a daughter Mary Kearney, born in 1862, who passed away age 3 in December 1865. The child is known only from an 1865 Virginia death record, with given parents names Edward and Judith Kearney (Judith may be Julia), but nothing further to verify it. ^[10]
