Biography

Abraham (Salomon) Königsbacher has German Roots.
Abraham (Salomon) Königsbacher has Jewish Roots.

Abraham Salomon was born on 21 December 1802 in Talheim near Heilbronn (in present-day Baden-Württemberg, Germany), as child of Salomon Aaron, school teacher and cantor ("Schullehrer und Vorsänger") from the nearby Königsbach, and his wife Sprinz née Moses from the nearby Horkheim.[1] [2]

Following Jewish tradition, he did not bear an inheritable surname, but was given his father's name (Salomon) as last name. This changed with the Emancipation Act of 1828, when Jews also had to choose such an inheritable surname. His father chose the name "Königsbacher" for himself and his family, referring to his birthplace "Königsbach".

Abraham Königsbacher, "assessor" and merchant ("Beisizer und Handelsmann") in Talheim, married Esther, daughter of Maier Löwenthal and Vogel née Moses, on 26 October 1841.[3] [4]

Abraham Königsbacher, husband of Ernestine born Löwenthal, died of pneumonia ("Lungenentzündung") on 4 January 1887 at 10 am in Thalheim at the age of 84 years and was buried on 6 January at 10 am at the Jewish cemetery of Sontheim.[5] [6] [7] [8]

From Ann Sunstein:

Morris Kingsbacher and his brother Aaron never brought over their parents from Germany. (She had separate framed pictures of them) They must have had other children who remained in Germany , for my parents (probably with the help of the Frank and Stix sisters) brought over two spinster cousins in the early 30's to escape from Hitler's Germany. They supported them in a Pittsburgh apartment till they died, some ten years later. These great grandparents were the ones who lived in the apartment in the castle in Mannheim that I have a picture of. They were rather stern and plain looking, though their son and my grandfather I thought were handsome.[9]
