Biography

Quote from speech made by Robert Young Clay, retired archivist from the Library of Virginia: "By trying to separate fact from fiction concerning John's life, I would hope to encourage all of you to be very careful in your research and to be very skeptical of all claims concerning our early Virginia ancestors. We have now spent over three hundred years imagining, misreading, misinterpreting, embroidering and simply lying about the founders of our early families. The product of those three hundred years of ancestral enhancement is often far from being either genealogical or historical truth. I cannot warn too strongly against gullibly accepting the claims of past researchers."

Hi again Beth,

Thanks for taking responsibility for more Orphaned Profiles. This After Adopting Orphans FAQ explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers. One quick way to find the profiles you adopted is by searching your Contributions List for the word "adopted" and "manager." You can find a quick link to your Contributions List in the My WikiTree dropdown menu.

If you will be working with any profiles needing GEDCOM cleanup, the AGC tool can help with formatting so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

Let me know if you have any questions on how to find and record sources, merge duplicates, clean up GEDCOM biographies, and interpret the Suggestions report. I'm here to help!

Hello, Beth, you were asking me about James Chappell profile in the Chappell Virginia ancestry. You are a relatively new member and may not know this, that inasmuch as James Chappell's profile page is an open profile, you can edit the profile, and add appropriate sources as needed. Please do so to make this common ancestor's profile more accurate. THANKS much.

Hi

The GEDCOM will not automatically populate your tree, it generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through either accepting or rejecting suggested matches. Once you have done this the data from your file will be filled in on the add profile screen so that you can review and make adjustments before saving.

One of our mentors created a tutorial for the GEDCOMpare process that I found very helpful. I hope that you will too.

Hi Beth,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. Click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See:https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles#Cite_reliable_sources).

Hi Beth,

This is a courtesy e-mail to see how things are going. Are you enjoying WikiTree so far? Have the tips in the New Member How-Tos been helpful?

DNA at WikiTree provides a visual way for you to find others who have tested and have the potential of having common ancestors. To get the best results you need to start with yourself and add sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to existing profiles in WikiTree. 24 hours later, your test will have populated on potential matches.

Please do let me know if you have any questions about how WikiTree works, no matter how small. My rule of thumb when I started was to search for an answer for five minutes, then reach out to my Greeters, and then resume searching. I might have found the answer before they got back with me but they sometimes offered a different way of doing the same thing which was easier.

You can reach me by using the reply link for this comment or send a private message from my profile by clicking my name. See you in the branches,

Debi ~ WikiGreeter

P.S. Did you discover that the tags on your profile are clickable links to a page of other people who have that tag? They also control the information which is included in the activity reports which you receive from WikiTree. You can add more, up to 20 total, or delete some if you are receiving irrelevant information.

Hi Debi,

I believe Morrison-5373 and Morrison-10550 are the same person and need to be merged. Since I have never merged 2 records on Wikitree maybe you would do the merge. Thanks, Beth

Hi Beth,

I think you are correct. Neither of us will be able to complete the merge unless the current Profile Managers agree. There's nothing like learning by doing, so I'm going to give you the instructions on how to initiate it. Please let me know if you would still rather I do it:

  • Since the surname spelling is the same, start the process on the profile with the higher number
  • Scroll to the "Matches & Merges" section near the bottom
  • Click the "initiation a merge" link
  • The higher profile number will automatically be filled in to the first box
  • Type the lower profile number in the second box
  • Click the Compare button to see the two profiles side-by-side
  • Take a minute to review the profiles one final time
  • If you are sure they are the same, click the "merge them" link at the top
  • In the comment box, explain why you think the two profiles represent the same person (ex. two profiles for a man named William, connected as the child of the same mother and spouse of the same wife)
  • Click the Propose Merge button

That will create an email to both profiles managers. They will compare the data and either approve or reject the merge. If neither is rejects the merge but no one completes it, the merge will be set to auto-approved in 30 days. At that time, anyone who has signed the Honor Code can complete the process. You can read more about the process in the Merging Help page and the Matching and Merging FAQ page.

Let me know if you have any questions or want me to do it,

Debi

Hi Debi,

I will do the merge; thanks so much for the information. I have another one Porter-2171 and Porter-2184, I adopted these because they were orphaned, but would appreciate your input on the Porter merge. Thanks, Beth

posted by Beth (Jones) Gay
Hi Beth,

The Porter merge is much less certain. They have different parents which will have to be resolved first. Neither profile has sources which identify his parents and the DAR record doesn't identify the parents of his wife.

Okay, thanks; I will check on my data on the Porter family. Beth

I need some advice from the adoption angels but none of the forms are applicable. Beth
posted by Beth (Jones) Gay
Hi Beth,

Would the information in either of these to FAQs created by the Adoption Angels Project answer your questions? If not, please reply to me privately with a little more detail and I will figure out who will have the answers you need and how to put you in touch with them.

How to set up profiles for living adoptees

How to set up profiles for deceased adoptees

If it isn't a confidential situation, you could also ask in the Genealogist to Genealogist (G2G) forum. Use Adoption and Mentor for two of the tags to get the attention of those who specialize in adoption matters.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Debi
