Peter Jones Sr. was a private in the Amelia County Militia during the American Revolutionary War and paid supply tax in Amelia County in 1783.[6][7] Although he served as an enlisted man, he is sometimes given the honorary title of Major, but this was not his military rank.[citation needed]

He died before 27 June 1799 in Amelia County, Virginia.[7]

Mother: His mother's maiden name is said to be "Stratton"[9] - Sarah (Stratton) Jones (1683-1728).
DAR records: In 1783, there were three Peter Joneses in Amelia County.[7] Two were this Peter (1720-1799), who is honored for his service by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution as Patriotic Ancestor #A062523,[7] and his son Peter (Jr.), who also paid supply tax and is honored by the DAR as Patriotic Ancestor #A062527.[4] Bartholomew "Batte" Jones, another son of Peter Jones Sr., served as a Lieutenant and is honored for his military service as DAR Ancestor #A061923.[5]
Disputed or uncertain children:
  • Edward H. Jones (born 1745/1755)[10]
  • Branch Jones (born about 1757 in Amelia County)[11]
  • Sarah Ann Jones[12]
Disputed daughter (daughters?) Frances:
  • Frances (Jones) Barnett (had been attached as his and Sarah's daughter but no supporting sources - source for the profile was just her FindAGrave memorial as of 9 February 2021, which doesn't mention parents).[13]
  • Frances (Jones) Ellington[14]
Location notes: His father was "of Prince George and Amelia counties".[citation needed] In 1720, Bristol Parish served Prince George County. Amelia County was formed from Brunswick & Prince George counties in 1734/5; it was not served by Bristol Parish.[15]

Hi US Southern Colonies Project! I had orphaned this profile, thinking that between the biography and the space page Virginia Peter Joneses, it wouldn't need project management. I was wrong. I've added the project as a manager. I think we're ok without PPP (even though children are being attached without sources, a reliable source for who his children were has yet to be found; I've redone his wife's profile with a list of children in the Research Notes section - see Tanner-2993#Research Notes).

I forgot that I'd found an abstract of his will. That will help!

See also Space:Virginia Peter Joneses. On that page is the following note, which is probably about this Peter & his father:
Note: Richard Jones of Amelia County had a son Peter also: "In April, 1757, Richard Jones, Sr., of Amelia County, conveyed to Peter Jones, Jr. his son, 700 acres in Raleigh Parish, Amelia County...." ~ Source: Allied Families: Early Virginia Jones Families by Kathryn Gearhart

Peter Jones is called "Jr" in this record, which indicates that there was an older Peter Jones living in Amelia County (probably in the same parish) in 1757 & is likely to have been Jones-1543, father of another Peter Jones (Jones-8753). That Peter Jones (Jones-8753, son of Peter Jones-1543) was probably the third Peter Jones that DAR says was living in Amelia County in 1783.

Ann Ward is likely the daughter of Rowland Ward - Ward-17692 (his Amelia County, 1800 will names a daughter Ann Jones).

the google e-book, Bulletin of the Virginia State Library, Volumes 11-15, picks up with Peter & Sarah Tanner on p 169, but if it says who Peter's parents are, I missed it. Notes on Southside Virginia

(shows Elizabeth Jones m Littleberry Royall on May 25, 1780 & more... including details on son Robert)

Another article shows a Peter Jones born Nov. 2, 1733 with will proved 1799 in Amelia County (naming a daughter Elizabeth, m a Royall) as the son of Abraham and Sarah "Batt, sister of Henry Batt." But I think perhaps the author of that article has combined information on this Peter with the Peter born to Abraham and Sarah. (Abraham moved to Amelia county, where his will was proved in 1794.)
