Wells Smith Jones was an American physician, politician and soldier. Jones was a Brevet Brigadier General in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Wells was born on August 3, 1830, in Ross County, Ohio . [1]

Military Service

On October 3, 1861, Wells S. Jones enlisted in the 53rd Regiment, Ohio Infantry. Jones mustered in as a Captain in Company A the same day. [2][3] On May 2, 1862, Jones was promoted to Colonel in command of the 53rd Regiment. In 1863, Jones led his regiment in the Siege of Vicksburg and the Battle of Missionary Ridge. In 1864, Jones led his regiment in the Atlanta Campaign. He saw combat at the Battle of Resaca, the Battle of Dallas, and the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. [4]

When Brigadier General Joseph A. J. Lightburn was wounded, Colonel Jones was assigned to command a brigade; he commanded the brigade until the end of the War. [5][4]

In 1864, Colonel Jones participated in the March to the Sea. He was wounded at Fort McAllister, Georgia. [4][2]

On March 13, 1865, Jones was brevetted Brigadier General. Brigadier General Jones mustered out of service on August 11, 1865. [4]

Postbellum

After the War, Jones graduated from Starling Medical College in 1866. [4] On September 3, 1866, Wells S Jones married Elizabeth H Kincaid in Pike County, Ohio. [6]

His wife, Elizabeth, died in 1876. On June 20, 1881, Wells Jones married Mary Frances Molineaux Wetmore in Pike County, Ohio. [7] They had 3 children: Robert Ralph Jones, Willard Tecumseh Sherman Jones and Mary Kathleen Jones. [1]

Wells Smith Jones passed away in 1914. He was buried at Evergreen Union Cemetery, Waverly, Ohio. [1]

  • 53d Ohio Infantry monument, Vicksburg National Military Park. This unit was attached to Col. Joseph R Cockerills's 3d Brigade, of Gen. William Sooy Smith's 1st Division, Maj. Gen. Cadwallader C. Washburn's XVI Army Corps (Detachment) and commanded by Wells S. Jones. [8]
