Biography

In our family records, she was born Mary JOHNSTONE. She named her son John JOHNSTONE Hale (my great-grandfather) and her grandson is Joe JOHNSTONE Hale (my great-uncle). Joe JOHNSTONE Hale lived on our ranch with my family in Gisela, Gila, Arizona for 30 years. He knew I was the family genealogist so told me many times how to spell his name so it would be correct. (Some others on Ancestry and Wikitree use Johnston or Johnson). Different family lines may have used different spellings.

Uncle Joe Johnstone Hale also told me he was named after a Civil War General. Of course, from the South. He was proud of that, but I haven't proven it. - Jayne Peace Pyle

Mary was born in 1796. She died in 1879 at the age of 83.

Parents: Samuel Johnson 1757 - 1834 and Mary B. (Hammond) Johnson 1761 - 1853.

Spouse: William Bourne 1794 - 1882. Findagrave #54358599 (pic. on page)

Spelling of last name: according to my family records and members of my family who lived on the same ranch as I did in Gisela, Gila, AZ, the spelling was JOHNSTONE, NOT JOHNSON. *Jayne Pyle Family Records.

Johnson-8971 and Johnstone-3754 are the same person --- different members of the family used different spellings. So how do we correct this? In my family for at least 150 years, the spelling has been JOHNSTONE, as it is in the book, Pioneer Settlers of Grayson County, VA. Other have spelled is Johnson, I guess.

In my records the name is JOHNSTONE. My great grandfather was John Johnstone Hale and his son, my great uncle who I knew well, was Joe Johnstone Hale. I was often told me that his middle name was NOT Johnson or Johnston, but JOHNSTONE. The name came from Stephen Hale's wife's mother, Mary Polly JOHNSTONE. Stephen Hale's wife was Rosamond Bourne (1796-1879)

Johnson-8971 and Johnstone-3754 are not ready to be merged because: Last name at birth needs to be resolved, but clear duplicate otherwise.

Johnson-8971 and Johnstone-3754 appear to represent the same person because: Same dates, husband and marriage dates identical, same parents
