William Edward Johnston was born on 1 June 1873, [1]in Blackville, Northumberland, New Brunswick, Canada, his father, John Johnston, was 34 and his mother, Susannah C Pratt, was 31. He married Levinia Bernice Storey on 22 September 1895, [2] in Blissfield, Northumberland, New Brunswick, Canada. They were the parents of at least 5 sons and 6 daughters. He died on 29 June 1918,[3][1] in Frévent, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France, at the age of 45, and was buried in Saint-Hilaire, Montauban, Tarn-et-Garonne, Midi-Pyrénées, France.
William was buried in Saint Hilaire Cemetery Extension, Frevent, Departement du Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France.[4]His name was also placed on a headstone in Doaktown[5]

He was returning from the refilling point with the water cart when his team started to run away. He dropped the reigns and fell off while trying to retrieve them. He was run over by the cart and died of his injuries.[6]
