Harvey Johnson was a leading African American pastor, activist, and longtime leader of the Union Baptist Church during the 19th century and early 20th century.[1]
Harvey Johnson was born about 1843 in Faquier County, Virginia, son of Harriet and Thomas Johnson who were enslaved at the time of his birth. When they were freed, his parents moved to Alexandria, Virginia.[2]
In 1873 July 1, not long after he began serving the Union Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland, Rev. Harvey Johnson set up a bank account with the Freedman's Bank. [3]
When Harvey decided to dedicate his life to Christianity he enrolled in Wayland Theological Seminary in 1868. After four years he graduated with honors. Soon, in 1872, he was asked to serve at the Union Baptist Church in Baltimore. Which he did for the rest of his life, 50 years.[4]
An obituary states that Rev. Harvey Johnson was a "thinker, a scholar, and a writer but with it all a man who guided and directed the work of the community....His was a life brimful of labor and service for others."[5]
According to the Maryland State Archives, Harvey Johnson married Amelia E. Hall on 17 April 1877. Amelia, born 1858, in Canada, had come to Baltimore when her parents re-located there in 1874.
In 1880, Harvey Johnson is married to Amelia E. (Hall) Johnson. They have a 2 y.o. daughter, Jessie E. Johnson. Ameila's 56 y.o. mother, Eleanora Hall is living with the couple in Baltimore, Maryland.[6]
In 1900, the Johnson family is living at 775 Lexington St. in Baltimore, Maryland. They own their home without mortgage. Rev. Harvey, minister at the and Amelia have been married 23 years. Amelia has had 3 births and her children are all living. [7] Also in the household are their two sons, who are in school, and Amelia's mother.
Rev. Harvey Johnson died about 1923 in Baltimore, Maryland. He is buried in Laurel Cemetery, Eldersburg, Carroll County, Maryland, USA.[8]
