Amelia E. Johnson was one of the first North American Black writers to publish a novel. She wrote poetry, short fiction and three novels and was the publisher of two magazines for young people.[1]
Born in 1858 in Toronto, Canada West (Ontario), she was the daughter of American immigrants Levi Hall, a carpenter, and his wife, Eleanora. She was recorded in the Canada Census, 1871, living in Montreal, Quebec, with her parents and brother Daniel. [2]
Her parents had been born in Maryland[3] and returned there in 1874. They lived in Baltimore, where Amelia met Baptist minister Harvey Johnson. They were married on April 17, 1877. They had two sons and a daughter.[4]
In the 1910 census, she was living in Baltimore with her husband and their son Prentiss.[5]
In the 1920 census, she was living in Baltimore with her husband and their son Prentiss.[6]
Amelia was mentioned on a memorial in Laurel Cemetery, Eldersburg, Carroll County, Maryland, United States with a death date of 29 March 1922.[7]
