Biography

Son of William Jephson, Grantee of Froyle and Mary née Goringe. His father, William, acquired the estate in 1541 but came from Hardham in Sussex where son William is likely to have been born.

The Inquisition Post Mortem for (father) William shows that son William was aged ten years, six weeks and four days on the day that (father) William died, so 23rd July 1531.

Father William was one of the Six Clerks of Chancery so he was also active in London, thus London is also an alternative birth place.

Siblings from his father's 2nd marriage, to Mary née Gifford

He married Mary née Dannett, of Dannett’s Hall, Leicester and possibly Maria, a widow, unless this is the same person as Mary.

Children: William, Sir John, Catherine who married Jewell, Anne who married Mervyn and Mary who married Lucas of Froyle.

1571: High Sheriff of Hampshire: 1575: Herald’s Visitation of Hampshire: 1585: He gave GBP 50.00 to the Armada fund.

It is likely that he lived at Froyle at least part of the time from 1541 when his father, William, acquired the estate from Henry VIII. He inherited the estate from his mother, Mary, when she died in 1557.

He added Froyle Court, Froyle Place and Mill Court to the Froyle lands. Mill Court (also called Millcourte or Mullcourte) seems to have been owned by his father in law, Sir John Dannatt. He also built a new house at Froyle which was completed the same year as the Armada (1588).

Per his mother’s Will (see Baigent: SofG, Hampshire Wills, 1548-1558), he was “beyond the sea and attending on my Lord Mountague, his master” when her Will was written, before June 1557, but he appears to have been back in November 1557 when the inventory was taken.

Probably related to him: P.R.O Long Room, Star Chamber Proceeedings: Elizabeth 1 (B.146 on cover), Stack B 98/15: William Jephson.

According to History of the manor of Westhope, County Salop, page 41, he was also the executor of the Will of a Sir John Dannatt, his wife's brother in 1606. Both sons, Sir Willian and Sir John, were mentioned in this Will and received bequests from him.

He died after 1614 according to the Parliamentary History relating to his son, Sir William, M.P.
