John King Jackson was an American lawyer and soldier. He served as a Brigadier General in the Confederate army during the Civil War.
John King Jackson was born on February 8, 1828, in Augusta, Georgia. He was the son of William Jackson and Ann Eliza (Fox) Jackson. [6]
John K. Jackson attended Richmond Academy in Augusta, Georgia. He graduated with Honors from the University of South Carolina. [3] [4] [5] [6]
On March 8, 1849, John K. Jackson married Louisa Virginia Hardwick in Richmond County, Georgia. [7] They had three sons: Thomas M. Jackson, William E. Jackson and John Hardwick Jackson. [3] [4] [5] [6]
In 1848, John K. Jackson was admitted to the Georgia State Bar and began the practice of law. Jackson practiced law from 1848 to 1861. [3] [4] [5] [6]
After the Civil War, Jackson returned to the practice of law. He died about a year later. [3] [4] [5] [6]
From 1948 to 1861, John K. Jackson served in the Georgia State Militia. [6] He was a First Lieutenant in Oglethorpe's infantry. He was elected Captain and eventually, elected Lieutenant Colonel of the battalion of companies in Augusta, Georgia. [3] []4] [5] [6]
In May 1861, at the outbreak of the Civil War, Jackson was commissioned Colonel of the 5th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. [3] [4] [5] [6] In 1861, Jackson was in command of the post at Pensacola, Florida. He was engaged in the Battle of Santa Rosa Island. In January 1862, Jackson was promoted to Brigadier General. In February 1862, Jackson was transferred to the command of the post at Grand Junction, Tennessee. Jackson commanded a brigade at the Battle of Shiloh. Jackson fought with distinction at Chickamauga and participated in the Battle of Missionary Ridge. [3] [5] [6]
In 1864, Jackson participated in the Atlanta Campaign. In July 1864, Jackson was transferred to command of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Jackson participated in the siege of Savannah. [3] [5] [6]
In 1865, Jackson was Quartermaster for the Army of Tennessee at Branchville, South Carolina. [6] After the surrender of the Confederacy, Jackson was paroled on May 17, 1865, at Atlanta, Georgia. [3] [5] [6]
John K. Jackson passed away on February 27, 1866, at Milledgeville, Georgia. He died of pneumonia. He was interred at Magnolia Cemetery, Augusta, Georgia. [1] [6]
