Biography

William was baptised on 17 March 1782 in Alberbury in the Atcham district of Shropshire, England. He was the son of Richard Jacks and his wife Elizabeth nee Roberts.

William became a farmer. He married Mary Morgan on 28 May 1800 at the Church of the Holy Cross, Shrewsbury (Shrewsbury Abbey). They had eight children between 1801 and 1818: Thomas, William, David, Tryphena, Martha, Samuel, Mary and Pryce Morgan Jacks. They were all baptised in Chirbury, Shropshire where the family lived.

By 1851, William was a widower. At the time of the 1851 census, he was living with John Griffiths from Alberbury, then a farmer in Benthal(l) a few km east of Alberbury. In 1861 he was still living with John but described as his father-in-law. John's wife was called Eliza and she was born in Alberbury in 1813. Hence she was not a daughter of William. The relationship between William and the Griffiths family remains to be established.

William died in 1866 in the Shrewsbury District, aged 84.

Research Note

William may have married a second time. On 14 November 1821, a William Jacks married Mary Powell in Chirbury. This wasn't William junior (William's son) but may have been a different William Jacks. The name was not uncommon in Shropshire at this time.Eady-184 17:00, 19 September 2022 (UTC)
