Biography

William Jacka, son of James(blacksmith) & Mary Ann residing in Ashtown, was baptised on 28 August 1833 in Breage, Cornwall, England.[1]

William married twice

  1. William's marriage to Ellen Rowe was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1854 in the Helston district.[2][3] Elizabeth's death (age 27) was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1862 in the Helston district.[4] Elizabeth was buried on 23 April 1862 in Breage, Cornwall, England.[5] Together they had the following children:
    1. William George Jacka was born in 1855 and baptised on the 25 December 1855 in Germoe, Cornwall, England, the son of William Jacka(miner) and Ellen Rowe residing in Ashtown.[6][7]
    2. Elizabeth Ellen Jacka, born 18 October 1857 and baptised on 25 December 1857 the daughter of William Jacka( miner) & Elizabeth Rowe residing in Breage, Cornwall, England.[8][9] Elizabeth Ellen passed away in 1858 while residing in Ashton, and was buried on 17 August. in the parish of Breage, Cornwall, England.[10][11]
    3. Solomon Rowe Jacka, born in 1859, and baptised on 8 October 1859, in Breage, Cornwall, the son of William Jacka(miner) and Elizabeth Rowe residing in Ashton.[12][13] Solomon died age 6 and was buried on 13 May 1866 in Porthleven, Cornwall, England.[14][15]
  2. Elizabeth Argall nee Sincock circa 1862, Michigan, USA. Together they had the following children:
    1. Josiah born 2 October 1866, son of William Jacka, in Crystal Falls, Iron, Michigan, United States.[16][17][18]
    2. Elizabeth Jacka, born circa 1868 in Michigan, the daughter of Wm Jacka & Elizabeth Sincock.[19][20][21][17][18]
    3. Lena Jacka born circa 1869, in Michigan.[22][17][18]
    4. Mary Ann Jacka born 1871 in Wisconsin, United States.[18]
    5. Solomon Rowe Jacka born 24 December 1873 in New York.[23][18]

William Jacka died at age 70 on 7 February 1901 in Ashland, Ashland County, Wisconsin [24][25][26][27] William was buried in Mountain Hope Cemetery, Ashland, Wisconsin, USA.[28] His grave marker on Block 27, Lot 8, Grave 2E, reads as follows:

1861 Census: In the 1861 UK Census, William's wife, Ellen, is listed as a Miner's wife, aged 26 and born in Sithney. She is living (as head of family) in Ashton, Breage, with 2 sons and her sister-in-law (husband's brother's wife). [32] William is not present and he may have already travelled to the United States in preparation for the family's move abroad. While William is away [Elizabeth] Ellen passes away. William has not been located in either the 1861 English Census or the 1860 US Census, his whereabouts are unknown.

1870 US Census: In the 1870 census, William (age 40) was the head of household in Hazel Green, Grant, Wisconsin, United States.[17]

Research Notes

"CAPT. WILLIAM JACKA, first captain of the Copper Falls Mine, was born in Cornwall, Eng., January 30, 1832; was brought up at mining work. In 1852, he went to South America for a London mining company; spent two years in that country, and returned to England. In 1859, he came to the United States, and direct to Lake Superior, where he engaged with the Minnesota Mining Company; he returned to England again in 1861, and, in the fall of the following year, came back to Lake Superior; he then engaged with the Amygdaloid Mining Company ; he continued with the company until 1867; during three years o'f this time, he served as mining captain. From 1867 to 1870, he was assistant mining captain of the Calumet & Hecla Mine; in the spring of 1870, he went to Wisconsin, and from there to New York; he was engaged in mining in the latter State until 1875, when he returned to Lake Superior and accepted the position of mining captain at the Minong Mine on Isle Royale, which position he held five years and three months; he was next employed as mining captain at the Allouez Mine_one year,and in August,1881,_accepted his present position.[34]
Captain William JACKA, aged 69 years, well known in Calumet and Keweenaw county, where he was employed for many years, died at his home at Ashland, Northern Wisconsin last Thursday. He was mining captain at the old Copper Falls mine. He was a brother of the late George JACKA, the father of George JACKA of Calumet; also Wrn JACKA, the well known liveryman; He had been making his home at Ashland after leaving Calumet and will be buried at Ashland. He was born in CORNWALL, ENGLAND 1832 January 30 and was brought up at mining work. He spent two years in South America for a London Mining company. He returned to England in 1854 and than came to the copper country and to the Minnesota Mining Company. He returned to England in 186? He than came to the Lake Superior copper country and worked till 1877. He mined in different states including Wisconsin, New York and others. In 1881 he went back to Copper Falls mine as a Captain till he gave up mining.[35]
