Biography

Hannah married Richard SMITH in Warren County, Ohio, on January 23, 1825, when she was 18 years old. One year later, she gave birth to the first of nine children. She and her husband moved from Ohio to Tippecanoe County, Indiana, and then to Carroll County, Indiana.

Only five of her nine children reached maturity: Eliza Louisa, Rachel, Lewis, Mary Jane, and John William. The children who died as infants were Sarah, Amanda Malina, Alvin, and an infant who died in 1833 (name unknown).

• Manuscript written by Mary TODD LINCOLN's half-sister., known as the "Helms Papers," MSS 425, reels 12, 13 and 14; it is available from The Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort, KY, on inter-library loan only. The manuscript was by Emily Todd (Mrs. Helm), younger paternal half-sister of Mary Todd (Mrs. Lincoln). However, the portion of the manuscript dealing with Hannah was written by Dr. Simeon Seymor Todd (1826-1899). The typed copy was transcribed by Kentucky Historical Society librarian Nina Visscher in 1939.
