Biography

Joseph was born in 1823. He was the son of John Jack and Elizabeth Smith. He passed away in 1906.

From Findagrave: Joseph was the youngest of eleven children and outlived his same-generation relatives. Decades after his death, he was remembered only as "old Uncle Joe Jack." In 1987, that name was repeated to someone looking at an old family group picture. Those looking at the photo couldn't figure out who "Joe Jack" was, but the guess was that, "He's probably not a relative, but just an old man that folks called 'uncle' out of respect for his age."

The guess also was that the man's last name was not known, and that he had two first names, sort of like "Billy Bob" or "Jamie Sue."

At the same time that family genealogists didn't know what to make of old "Joe Jack" in the family photo, the genealogists also did not know the maiden name of their ancestor whose first name was Hannah and who was the wife of Richard SMITH.

When Hannah's maiden name turned up, the name was JACK. "Uncle Joe Jack" was Hannah JACK's younger brother. Joe had outlived Hannah by 36 years, and only the oldest members of the family had known of the relationship. By 1987 when family genealogists were looking at a photo of a large group of family members, there was no one living who had even heard of the relationship. The one clue was the memory of something said by an old family member who had died the year before. It was remembered that she had described the man in the photo as "Uncle Joe Jack." He was the brother of the old woman's great-grandmother. (And the old woman was the daughter of the brother of the great-grandfather of the husband of the woman passing on the old woman's words!)

Joseph Patterson JACK was born in Warren Co., Ohio, to John Thomas JACK and his wife, Elizabeth Todd SMITH. His siblings were Elijah, James, Hannah, Sarah, John, Nancy, Silas, David, Jane, and Levi.

Through his mother, Joseph was a 2nd cousin to Mary TODD, Mrs. Abraham LINCOLN.

In 1860, 1870, and 1880, Joseph was living in Parke Co., Indiana, with his wife and children.

In 1900, he was living in Carroll Co., Indiana, as a boarder with the John & Carol HUFFORD family.

Wife: Nancy MARKS.

Children: Mary Jane (1855-1920), John T. M. (1858-1889), George W., and Rebecca.

NOTE: There is disagreement about his date of birth. It is known that he was the youngest of the 11 children. However, some researchers claim that 10th-born child was born in February 1822. If so, Joseph could not have been born in May 1822. Because of that, his birth year is listed as 1823 here.
