At the time of the 1851 census Thomas was living in Gordon with his father and step-mother. Thomas's occupation was given as Assistant Carrier & Grocer, his father Thomas Jack, aged 76, being a Carrier & Grocer. They had one house servant, Isabella Cribbis, aged 31, perhaps because Agnes Lockie, aged 73, was no longer able to do all the housework by herself.[9]
Thomas married Isabella Cribbis (1820–1899) on or after 10 June 1851 in Gordon.[10] They had four known children:
Death of father Thomas Jack on 27 June 1859 in the registration district of Gordon, Berwickshire, Scotland.[15]

Difficulties matching Thomas' age to the baptismal record: In the 1841 census Thomas's age was recorded as 25, but if it was rounded down to the nearest five years as per the instructions to the census takers, that could mean he gave his age as anything between 25 and 29, which would give a birth year of between 1812 and 1816. In the 1851 census Thomas's age was recorded as 40, giving him a birth year of 1811. In the 1861 census Thomas's age was recorded as 51, giving him a birth year of 1810. In the 1871 census Thomas's age was recorded as 60, giving him a birth year of 1811. In the 1881 census Thomas's age was recorded as 70, giving him a birth year of 1811. Thomas's death certificate records his age as 72 in 1883, giving him a birth year of 1811. As the 1808 baptism does not give the mother's name, it is possible that this is either a birth to different parents or an older sibling with the same name who pre-deceased him, and he was indeed born around 1811, but with no baptism recorded or no record surviving. The death entries for Thomas and his known siblings do give the same parents' names and the family group is together (with stepmother Elizabeth) on the 1841 census. While there are quite a few Thomas Jacks around the same geographical area at the same time, Agnes Lockie was a much more unusual name, and there appears to be no risk of confusion with other parental couples.
