William's original family stone in Crail Churchyard was so weathered there was no inscription legible. It was also lying at an extreme angle heading for a fall.

For the 250th anniversary of his death the family raised funds to straighten the stone and commission the commemorative tablet as part of the overall Commemoration of the Crail Fishing Disaster.
