Biography

Elizabeth Hutton was born in 1873 in Manchester, Lancashire, England to James Hutton and Elizabeth (Andrews) Hutton. Her birth was registered in Manchester in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Andrews.[1]

  • Her parents were thought to be the James Hutton who was born in Beverley, Yorkshire in about 1844 and his wife Elizabeth Atchinson who was born in Lincolnshire in about 1841. However, their daughter Elizabeth lived in Yorkshire all her life, and married John Akester in 1897. Whereas this Elizabeth Hutton married Thomas Stoker in 1903 in Lancashire. See the research notes below the biography for details of the other family. This Elizabeth's parents were both born in Scotland - this is consistent with later census records in Canada, which usually include the birthplace of the parents.

In 1881 Elizabeth Hutton (age 7, Scholar) lived at Cheetham St in Cheetham, Lancashire with her father James (42, Letterpress Printer), mother Elizabeth (44), and seven siblings: William (20, Letterpress Printer), Catherine (18, Dressmaker), James (14, Printer), John (12, Scholar), Charles (5, Scholar), Annie (3, Scholar), and Flora (1).[2]

In 1891 Elizabeth Hutton (age 18, Milliner) lived at Derby Street in Manchester with her father James (54, Letter Press Printer), mother Elizabeth (56), brother John (23, Picture Frame Maker), sister Flora (12, Scholar), widowed brother-in-law Alfred H Paget (25, Coal Merchant), and two nephews: James A Paget (2) and George S Paget (0).[3]

In 1901 Elizabeth Hutton (age 27, Milliner) lived at Derby Street in Manchester with her father James (63, Letterpress Printer), mother Elizabeth (65), and brother John (32, Barman).[4]

Elizabeth Hutton married Thomas Stoker in 1903. The marriage was registered in Prestwich, Lancashire in the last quarter of the year.[5]

Elizabeth and Thomas had two daughters:

  1. Flora Stoker (1905-1905)
  2. May (Stoker) Walsh (1906-1988)

Elizabeth and her family emigrated to Canada in 1911: Thomas Stoker (58, Draper & Farmer), with his wife Elizabeth (37) and daughter May (4 1/2), sailed 2nd class aboard the ship Empress of Britain, which departed from Liverpool on 10 Mar 1911 and arrived in St John, New Brunswick on 18 Mar 1911 - their destination was Edmonton, Alberta.[6] Thomas' brother Edgar also joined them.

The Family farmed in Alberta.

The family has made it to Victoria/Pakan Alberta. This was an HBC, Metis and Cree (seasonal) settlement. Smoky Lake became a larger destination due to the train.

The family moved to Athabasca at some point between 1911 and 1913. In August 1913, there is a fire that rips through Athabasca’s centre and most stores are lost, including theirs.

In 1916 the Athabasca census indicates that Thomas, Elizabeth, May and Cousin Joseph are still in Athabasca Alberta. Thomas has set up a dry goods store. Their nephew, Joseph Colville, is shown as employed at the store. They must have rebuilt after the fire as they are listed as shopkeeper (Thomas) and saleswoman (Elizabeth) and Salesman (Joseph)

1916 The big move to Edmonton - The Henderson Directories: They have moved to Edmonton by the time the directory is printed. Thomas has set up a dry goods store at 10202 101 ave. Joseph is a clerk. The are living at the Waverly Rooms. He would have been living there with his daughter, May, and wife. Nephew, Joseph Colville,is listed as living there as well.

Elizabeth Stoker Passed Away in 1956 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
