Biography

Francis Hutchinson immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Origin

Francis Hutchinson was baptized 24 December 1620 at Alford, Lincolnshire, England.[1] He was a son of William Hutchinson and Anne Marbury. The family immigrated in 1634 aboard the Griffin, settled initially at Boston and removed to Portsmouth in 1638 with the other Anabaptists, as the followers of Bridget's mother, Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson, were called.[1]

Boston Church

Francis was admitted to the Boston Church on 9 November 1634.[1] Francis was excommunicated from the Boston church on 18 July 1641.[1] The family had removed to the Narragansett Bay with other followers of his mother, Anne (Marbury) Hutchinson.[1]

Death and Legacy

Francis was apparently killed with his mother and many of his siblings in August 1643.[1] The family had removed to New Netherland near what would become the Hutchinson River in northern Bronx, New York City, and was massacred there by Siwanoy warriors.[2]

This profile gives August 20, 1643 as date of death, but the exact date is not known. The first report of the incident was made in John Winthrop's journal as the first entry for the month of September, but certainly took many days, possibly weeks for the news to reach him.[2] This profile gives Hutchinson Farm, above Pelham Bay, Nieuw Nederland, (Now Westchester) as the place of death and burial. The exact location of the Hutchinson home is not known. Otto Hufeland, in 1929, concluded that it was between Rattlesnake Brook and Black Dog Brook, on the west side of the Hutchinson River in Eastchester, but the small creeks described at the time are now long gone.[2]
