Cornelius Johannes Hunkin was born on July 25, 1928 in South Africa. His parents were Edwin James Henry Hunkin (1888 - 1958) and Jeseka Aletha (Le Roux) Hunkin (1903 - 1977). His father mistakenly registered his birth as 30 July 1928, which was the day he registered the birth and not the day that John was born. John's given name was Cornelius Johannes. He changed his name to John shortly before he married Joan. He was affectionately known by all as Johnny.

John met Joan in 1954. They met at a party their younger brothers - Kenneth Lynch and Clarence Hunkin convinced Joan to attend. Ken and Clarry were best friends. The party was in Malvern at a friend’s house across the road from John and Clarry's house. Their first date was when John asked Joan to attend a Hobo party with him. Everyone had to dress up as Hobos. John and Joan won first prize. Joan was given a bouquet of vegetables and a cut glass/crystal bowl.

John proposed to Joan 3 months later, but she said it was too soon. He proposed again 3 months after that, and Joan said yes. They had their engagement celebration at a dance with John's sister Louise and her date, Joan's cousin Eric and his wife Sheila, Joan's sister Joyce and her husband Jimmy, and a friend named Jean Anderson.

They were engaged for 2 years then John married Joan Eileen Lynch (1933 - living) on the 6th of April 1957 in Malvern, South Africa.. The bridesmaids were Joyce and Colleen - Joan's sisters. The best men were Clarry (John's brother) and Jimmy (Joyce's husband.)
