Biography

This profile is part of the Priest River, Idaho One Place Study.

Agnes Hulett was born in Jun 1893 in Illinois, USA[1], or on 18 Jan 1893 in Illinois[2], as the daughter of Perry Hulett (1860-1940)[3][4] and Dora (McCombs) Hulett (abt.1866-abt.1924).[5][6][7]

Agnes (17) was living in Walnut Grove, McDonough, Illinois in 1910 and not attending school but was able to read and write. Other household members included her parents, Perry (50) and Dora (42), and 8 siblings - Seth Hulett (1888-abt.1978) (22), Joseph (20), Taylor (15), Edmon (13), Lydia (10), Verne (8), Martin (5), and Frank (2) and one sister-in-law, Mona B (maiden name not provided and spouse not specified). Her father was working as a farmer.[5] Seven of her eight siblings are linked to her memorial at FindaGrave. (Martin has yet to be linked.)[7]

In 1912, Agness Hulett (20) and Clifford Friday (1894-1978) (19), the son of John Henry Fretueg (abt.1840-1928) (aka John Henry Friday) and Mary Stone, married in Brown County, Illinois.[6] (See research notes)

Two children born to this union appear to be Doris Friday Anderson and Dortha Friday Bowman.[7]

In 1920, Agnes married William Joshua Carey (abt.1877-abt.1963)[7]. A son, Otto Taylor Carey (1920-2001), was born to Agnes and William Perry Carey (1922-1983) on 28 Jul 1920 in Fillmore, Illinois.[8]

The same year, her husband,Clifford (26), was seen as divorced and living with his parents, John Henry Fretueg (abt.1840-1928) (76) and Mary Stone (66), a brother Allen Fretueg (47) and a 10 year old son, Clifford Fretueg. The entire household is seen with surname Fretueg but he used name Friday, so that may or may not be an accurate original surname. (I believe the immigrant father changed his name to Friday after immigrating but before children were born; however that needs to be confirmed and further substantiated.)[9] Clifford remarried in 1933. His second wife was Cathleen Lucille Vanorder[10].

Agnes moved from Cambridge to Priest River area about 1935[11]-1936.[1]

In 1940, Agnes (47) and her husband, William J (68) were living on Seventh Street, in Priest River, Bonner, Idaho with their five sons - Otto Taylor Carey (29), William H Carey (17), George D Carey (14), Daniel B Carey (12) and John J Carey (10).[11]

Agnes Carey died at the age of 64 on Monday, 6 May 1957 at the Newport Hospital in Newport, Pend O'Reille, Washington, USA.[2][4] Funeral services were held Sat., 2PM in the Moon funeral Chapel at Priest River with Interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Note that FindaGrave shows her death in Priest River,Bonner, Idaho which would be incompatible with location shown in her obituary[7]. Survivors were her husband, William J, five sons - Otto (California, William (Priest River, George (Idaho Falls), Daniel (Ephrata, Washington) and John (Priest River; and two daughters - Dora Anderson and Dorothy Bowman (both of Illinois).[1]

Research Notes

To whomever: There appears to be a duplicate husband listed.

Father-in-Law's Name: John Henry Fretueg (abt.1840-1928) (aka John Henry Friday) Fretueg may be incorrect transcription.

  1. I am not satisfied with the substantiation of the ancestral surname for her husband, Clifford's paternal line.. Need IMAGE of original birth/baptismal record(s).
  2. Name has been seen as Freitag (German spelling). The typed translation of his father's ENGLAND birth and baptism record shows name as FRIDAY. The image of his birth/baptism registration needs to be seen to ascertain spelling on the record (not just the transcription). Does anyone have an image of his original untranscribed record?
  3. The grandfather, supposedly born in Germany (acutally the informant indicated "Allemagne", which is the French "tribe" name for Germany. Who was the informant? Why would the birth location be referred to with a French word? If he was German-born to German parents, his name would most likely have been German (Freitag), not English (Friday). (Friday may be a "transcribed" variation showing the Anglicized version (Friday). What is the accurate original name of his grandfather on his own original untranscribed birth record? Is there an image that can be shared?

What was the full maiden name of her sister-in-law, Mona B, referenced in the bio above? Who was Mona B's husband? Was she an in-law through Agnes's brother OR through one of her husband's? She will need profile of her own. Red Brackets added as a reminder.

8 siblings may need profiles and subsequent linking. Red Bracketswere added as a reminder.

QUESTION: The 1920 Census showed her first husband with a son Clifford (age 12). Was this Clifford the son of Agnes Hulett? If so, why is he not listed as her child at FindaGrave and is there substantiation?

When was son George (mentioned in obit) born? Is there more info for him?

WHY ARE MY IMBEDDED SOURCES from earlier and from today NOT SHOWING PROPERLY BELOW?
