Biography

Joseph Henry Hughes was born on 14 April 1857 at London, Middlesex county, Canada West. He was a son of Joseph Cooper Hughes and Jane McAndless.

Joseph graduated from Toronto Normal School in 1874. He taught school for one year before becoming a general merchant in Ilderton, Middlesex county. He moved to Brandon, Manitoba in 1882 and set up lumberyards there and in Souris, Manitoba in partnership with T.H. Patrick.

Joseph married Anna Maria Hughes on 21 February 1883 in Metcalfe township, Middlesex county, Ontario.^[1] They had five children.

Joseph was an alderman in Brandon for four years and mayor in 1914.

He passed away following a prolonged illness on 5 August 1917 at Brandon and was buried in Brandon Municipal Cemetery.^[2]
