Obituary

A Fully Ripened Sheaf Garnered

Camille Aurora Hoyt was born at Farmington, N.Y. May 16, 1812 and died at Penfield, Pa. at 3 p.m. on Feb. 16, 1901. John Hoyt, in 1610 was an original settler of Salisbury, Mass. Seth Hoyt, a descendant, was a Revolutionary soldier. He emigrated to New Haven, Vt. The Hoyt family was of renown and honor, the famous Sherman's being of the number. Seth Hoyt's son, Dr. William, born in Vermont, practiced medicine in New York state then Penn'a and taught school here, engaged in business and finally settled in 1839, on 50 acres in Huston, now occupied by his son the venerable Wm. H. Hoyt.

To Dr. William and his wife Roby Mason were born Camille Aurora, Sarah Mariah, (Mrs. Jeremiah Hewitt), Sophia A. (Mrs. Wm. F. Green), William H., married Lydia O'Neal, Edgar M. married C. Amanda, daughter of Gould R. Hoyt, Eliza Jane, married Norman Wright, Seth, died young, Hiram M. married Barbara Brown.

IN 1815, Camille went to live with grandfather Seth at New Haven. Afterwards she dwelt with her parents, but seems to have lived some years with grandparents again. Sometime in the 1820s, she took her abode again with her parents on Toby in Penn'a, and lived there until her marriage by Justice Brockway to Benjamin C. Hewlett on May 31, 1835.

Of this union were born William now in Washington state, Julius died at 4 years, 8 months, Sarah Minerva (Mrs. C. Wandall), Flora A. (Mrs. C. Graham), Malina Alzira (Mrs. Daniel Sloppy) of New MIllport, Pa., May A. (Mrs. R.H. Lucore), deceased in 1875.

The family lived at county Line Run in Elk Co. where the father owned 50 acres of fine timber land. The house burned an in the calamity Benjamin Hewlett's feet were frozen so badly that he was never again well and on July 27, 1846, he died. The widow kept the family together for some years and afterwards kept house alone or lived with her children.

In 1858 came to her a remarkable spiritual experience. She was exceedingly hampered by poor health. But then while walking alone on the road the Lord came to save and heal. While she had been scarcely able to walk or even ride after this visitation she toiled and endured and ministered to others without failure or weariness or weakness. Henceforth, it is not too much to say that Grandma Hewlett was an unselfish saint, in whom dweld in fullness the spirit of the Master. Upon the afflicted and the erring were ever bestowed the gifts of her ministrations her sympathy and her charity. When others anathematized she spoke the Christ-like love and extenuation of her heart for the sinner.

And these Divine outgoings of a loving heart were not without reward. For the host who during the many years came to know her, gave homage to the selfless and helpful goodness of her with loving veneration.

For years her home was with Mrs. Sarah M. Wandall. Generous, sacrificing, industrious, she would permit only the very least possible to be done for her but the rather was exerting herself for others good and comfort.

The final illness was for less than one week. Her daughter noticed her evident failing and she was helped to bed. Before the end came she suffered considerably but the close was gentle and painless. She had said she wished to go home and asked Grandson Archie to take her hand and lead her there and truly and surely she has gone there.

The funeral was in the Penfield Methodist church on February 18, 1901, in charge of her pastor, Rev. A. Smith of the Free Methodist Church, Revs. S. Lee, D. Caldwell and F.G. Sleep assisting and Rev. J.S. McGeary preaching from the text chosen by the deceased ten years before, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." E.S. Flegal was the Director. The interment was in Penfield cemetery.

Thus has passed away one whose long life was not without the clouds and dark of sorrow and trial but upon the gloom was ever playing the golden light of loving faith and hope. ~[1]
