Lazarus Howlett was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Diemen's Land
Early Life in England
Lazarus Howlett was born to parents John Howlett and Mary Cook and was baptized at All Saints Parish church in Holbrook, Suffolk on August 30, 1801.[1]
He married Lucy Sheldrake in nearby Freston in 1823.[2]
Criminal Trial
After the birth of his son John in 1826[3], Lazarus was convicted of Grand Larceny at Ipswich in Suffolk, and was sentenced to transportation to Australia for 7 years. This newspaper article appeared in a local paper on July 28, 1827, the day following his trial.
“William Rose was tried on a charge of having burglariously entered the dwelling-house of Mrs Kerridge … in the night of May 31, and stolen a quantity of meat and other articles. Of this charge he was acquitted. The same prisoner … was then indicted with Lazarus Howlett, for having, in the same night, stolen from the stable of Mrs. Kerridge, a pair of breeches, a pair of overalls, a blue silk and cotton handkerchief, a clothes-brush, a looking-glass, two razors, a shaving brush, and a pocket knife, the property of Henry Bumstead, Mrs Kerridge’s servant. The shaving brush was found concealed under the floor of Howlett’s house with two bundles of keys, about 16, of different sizes and forms, one a skeleton key, and the knife was found in the drawer of his house. …[T]hey were both found guilty and sentenced to be transported 7 years. Howlett was very ill and lame, and indulged with a chair during the trial. When he heard the sentence, he said, “Thank you Sir, it is more than my father can do for me.” [William] Rose burst into tears.” [4]
Lazarus and William were held on the prison hulk, Leviathan, for a further ten months before being transported to Australia the following April.[5] In March 1828, just before sailing, both men were reported in the Quarterly Returns of Prisoners in hulks as having a good "bodily state" and "behaviour". Marriage
Lazarus finally left England in 1828 on the ship Woodford from Portsmouth. He served his sentence in Van Dieman's Land and after receiving his Ticket of Leave in 1834, became a farmer and married fellow convict Sarah Copley in 1837 at St Luke's Church in Richmond.[7] He was referred to as a Widower. Sarah and her sister, Mary, were transported to the Colony for stealing chickens. They sailed on the Hector, embarking at Woolwich in 1835.
Children
Lazarus and Sarah had a large family of eleven children.
Lazarus appeared on a list of, "persons entitled to be placed on the Electoral Roll for the return of a Member for the House of Assembly for the Electoral District of Richmond. He was a householder, renting land at Native Corners, the property of John McDonald.[18]
Shortly before his death, Lazarus purchased a 47 acre lot of land in the parish of Yarlinton, now a town of the same name, near Colebrook, Tasmania, on 14 August 1876.[19]
Death
Lazarus died on 20 December 1876, aged 73, and was buried in the cemetery at St Luke's Anglican church at Richmond, Tasmania. Cause of death was, "Chronic disease of the stomach". [20][21] Sarah lived another fifteen years and passed away on May 2, 1901.[22]
