James signed up for the WWI Draft on 6 September 1918 in Zanesville, Muskingum, Ohio, United States. He was still living with his parents and was 21 years old. James was working as a Rubber Worker for Goodyear Company in Akron, Ohio at the time of his registration. He listed his mother, Rebecca Howell, as his nearest relative.He was described as tall with a medium build with brown eyes and dark brown hair.^[1]
