Biography

Edward Howell was born in Staffordshire, England.

Genealogically Defined

Edward was born in Wombourne, Staffordshire, England, in about 1831, the youngest of eight children. His baptism record hasn't yet been located. His parents were John Howell and Susannah Hughes.

Edward was a bricklayer and journeyman. He married Mary Ann Lockley at St Peter's Church, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire on 21 September 1851. They had ten or possibly 11 children baptised between 1851 and 1863. The children included a set of triplets, two boys (Henry and Edward) and a girl (Susan) born on 22 June 1861 in Penn Fields. Each baby lived for less than a day, 19 days and 11 weeks respectively.

Mary Ann died in 1865. Three years later, Edward remarried. His second wife was Rebecca Coley. Edward and Rebecca married in Wolverhampton in 1868. There were no children from this marriage. However, in the 1871 census, a Mary H Lockley aged one year and born in Bilston, Staffordshire was listed as a nurse child. Bilston was then a small town to the SE of Wolverhampton. Mary appeared again in Edward's household in 1881, by then she was described as 'adopted', whether formally or informally is unknown. Mary was the daughter of Elizabeth Lockley. She was born on 19 March 1870 in Bilston. Her full name at birth was registered as Mary Ann Lockley. Her mother was the daughter of Edward's first wife by an unknown father.

Edward died in 1881 and was buried in Merridale Cemetery Wolverhampton on 26 April. His second wife Rebecca died 10 years later and was also buried at Merridale.

Research Note

A memoir by Frances Howell's son Charles Frederick Best, made available by Judith Hancock via Ancestry, mentions another daughter of Edward and Mary Ann. She was named Ethel. Charles recollected that she was younger than Mary. To date, Ethel's birth record has not been located in the General Register Office for England and Wales even by searching for a female child with surname Howell to a mother with surname Lockley born between 1851 and 1870.
