Johann Peter Huyett was born in 1743, possibly in Reading, Adams, Pennsylvania. Bell's Anthology suggests Philadelphia, but birth records of the children of parents Franz Carl Huyett and Mary show that they were living in Reading. [1]
In 1769, Peter moved to Huyetts Crossroads, Frederick County, Maryland from Exeter Township, Berks County, PA. "Franklin County", MD is present day "Washington County", MD. Ludwig, Peter's brother, remained in nearby Cavetown Township, Frederick County, MD and bought a farm. By 1774, Peter, his brother Phillip, and sister Elizabeth moved to Washington County, PA, from Berks Co., PA and earlier from Frederick Co., Maryland.[2]
1781 tax records list Peter Hewet as the owner of 60 acres of land in Amwell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania.[3] On the 20th of February 1786, 200 acres of land were surveyed for Peter Howit and 300 acres for Philip Howit in Washington County.[4]
Peter served in the Revolutionary War in Washington County, PA. He is listed as serving in the militia receiving £5.5.0 in pay, Register Volume A, p. 63 in the Pennsylvania Archives Card File for the Revolutionary War.[5] The Pennsylvania Archives list Peter Hewit as an Ensign in the Third Battalion, Sixth Company.[6]
1790 Census ledger lists "Peter Hewitt" a few lines under his brother Phillip's name. Peter lists in his household as 1 male, 2 males under 16 years old, and 4 females for a total of 7 persons.[7]
Peter passed away in November of 1802 Amwell Twp, Washington Co.[8] His children are listed in the orphan's court record.
Thought to be buried in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery, Glyde, North Bethlehem Twp., Washington Co. - his home church, or Hewitt Cemetery, Rice's Landing, Greene Co., PA, or Hewitt Cemetery, McCracken, Aleppo Twp., Greene Co., PA where his sons are buried.
