Francis Jay Herron was an American banker, lawyer, politician and soldier. Herron was a Major General in the Union Army during the Civil War. Herron was a United States Marshall and Secretary of State of Louisiana. Herron was a Medal of Honor recipient.

Francis J Herron was born in 1837, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was the son of John Herron and Clarissa (Anderson) Herron. [1]
Herron was born into a distinguished family. IN 1855, Herron moved to Dubuque, Iowa. He and his brothers established a bank. [2]
In January 1861, Francis J Herron raised an Iowa Militia company known as the "Governor's Greys." Herron offered his company to President-elect Lincoln. [3]
In April 1861, Herron was appointed Captain of Company I, 1st Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Herron saw combat at Boonville and Wilson's Creek. In August 1861, Captain Herron was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the 9th Regiment, Iowa Infantry. [4]
Lieutenant Colonel Herron fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge. He was wounded and taken prisoner. After his exchange, Lieutenant Colonel Herron was promoted to Brigadier General. (He later would be awarded the Medal of Honor for his conduct at the Battle of Pea Ridge). [2]
For his conduct at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Brigadier General Herron was promoted to Major General. When Vicksburg fell, General Herron was one of the three generals that General Grant chose to accept the formal surrender of arms.[3]
After the War, Herron stayed in Baton Rouge where he became a tax collector. From 1967 to 1869, Herron was a United States Marshall for the District of New Orleans. Then Herron served as Secretary of State of Louisiana.
In 1877, Herron moved to New York and practiced law. He also was a banker. There Herron married Adelaide Wilbray.
Major General Francis Jay Herron passed away on January 9, 1902. He was buried at Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, Queens County, New York. [1]
