Biography

Gerrit Jan "John" Henken was born on Feb. 16, 1902 in Rhenen, Utrecht, Netherlands, son to Arie Henken and Johanna van de Weetering.^[1] The Henken family immigrated to America from Holland March 1, 1905 on the ship the "Rotterdam". John Henken married (1) Emma Korth and second (2) Harriet (Vandestreek) Payson.

John Henken, 71, 21 S. Grove St., a former Waupun mayor and alderman, died Sunday afternoon, April 22, at Waupun Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 16, 1902, in The Netherlands to Arrie and Johanna Vande Weetering Henken. He came to the United States with his parents at the age of 2. Mr. Henken married the former Emma Korth Aug. 26, 1925. She died July 5, 1956. He then was married to the former Harriet Harper Oct. 2, 1957. Mr. Henken was employed by the Waupun Canning Co., until 1959. He was employed by the Waupun Street Department from June 23, 1959 to March 31, 1967. He was elected first ward alderman in 1947 and held that office until 1953, when he was elected mayor. He served as mayor from 1953-59 and 1968-70. He was reappointed first ward alderman in 1972 to fill the unexpired term of Ward Dunn, who was elected mayor. Mr. Henken was a member of the Dodge County Board of Supervisors from 1966-68. He was a member of the Waupun Lions Club, the Central Wisconsin Milk Control Council, Emmanuel Reformed Church, and the Waupun Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years. He is survived by his widow; two sons, Robert, Juneau; and Willard, Fond du Lac; one brother, Ira, Washington; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife; three brothers and one sister. Services were held at Emmanuel Reformed Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. George Chermak Officiating. Burial was in Forest Mound Cemetery, Waupun. Visitation was held from 4-9 p.m., Tuesday at Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, and Wednesday at the church from noon until the time of services.
