SUNDAY NEWS AND TRIBUNE, JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI Heading-Thomas Heisler, Resident of City 53 Years, Will Observe 90th Birthday Thomas Heisler, who for the past 53 years has lived in Jefferson City, Thursday, will celebrate his 90th birthday at his home, 228 West McCarty Street. The occasion will be marked with a family dinner which his children will attend. A well-known building contractor of the city up until ten years ago when he retired, Mr. Heisler is still leading an active life. He goes to St. Peter's Church and, as a charter member of the Benevolent Society, he attends their meetings on many occasions. He listens to the radio, drops up to the barber shop, visits with old friends on his daily walks, attends to some of the marketing for his daughter, Mrs. Fred Landwehr who lives at the family home and otherwise spends his days actively. He needs no cane to aid him on his walk and his general health is also good. Mr. Heisler is interested in the world about him and one of the high points of his day is the arrival of the New-Tribune, which he reads thoroughly. What goes on in Jefferson City is of primary interest to him and he keeps well informed. Fond of travel he has lost no opportunity to visit points of interest in both the United States and in Europe. In 1913, just prior to the beginning of World War I he spent four months abroad with his son, Dr. John Heisler, touring the continent. Many homes and buildings of prominence were built by Mr. Heisler, one of them the Masonic Temple, another present Knights of Columbus building during the more than half century he was active in his work here. He served for many years as vice-president of the Home Building and Loan Association and was active as a member of its building committee until 1942 when he resigned. Mr. Heisler was the son of a well known Cole county family, the late John and Elizabeth Heisler of St. Thomas. He was born in that community on August 14, 1857. There he married Miss Theresa Gerling. Of their twelve children, nine are living. Mrs. Heisler died in 1931. Four of Mr. Heisler's children, Mrs. Landwehr, Mrs. M. L. Redmond, Mrs. Philip Foley, and Dr. Quentin G. Heisler reside in Jefferson City. The five others are Dr. John C. Heisler of Tucson, Arizona, Mrs. Jay Barton of Batavia, Illinois; Mrs. H. J. Johnson of Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. George Vogle of Chicago, Illinois, and Mrs. Roy Schweiger of Dallas, Texas. Thomas and Theresia Heisler lived on Washington Street before they bought the property at 228 West McCarty Street. They purchased the property at West McCarty on October 9, 1901. Subsequently, Thomas Heisler built the family home. For many years, they had a grocery store in the downstairs left side of the house where they sold vegetables, flour, eggs. bacon, sugar and candy. They had large barrels filled with pickles and 'Mama's' yeast rolls were well renowned throughout the area. It was relatively similar to an old country store. The family also installed a telephone in the store for customers to call if they wanted to place grocery orders for delivery. During this time, Flora Koersches worked in the store.
