Biography

Mary Ann Hayward was born c.1818 in Rickinghall, Suffolk, England. She was the daughter of William Hayward who was a husbandman.[1]

Mary (age 22), daughter of William Haward, married Edwin Pulford (age 21) on 1 May 1840 in St. Mary, Redgrave With Botesdale, Suffolk, England. Bride and groom were from Botesdale, they were married by banns, and their witnesses were William Fakes, Sarah Hayward, and George Rose.[1]

In the 1841 census Mary (age 22) was in Rickinghall Superior, Suffolk, England.[15]

In the 1851 census Mary (age 30) was the wife of Edwin Pulford in Palgrave, Suffolk, England.[16]

Edwin and Mary Ann and family arrived in South Australia 12th October 1856 aboard the Blundel which had sailed from Southampton.[17]

Mary died (age 72) on 1 October 1890 in Unley, South Australia. She was laid to rest in the West Terrace Cemetery on 3 Oct 1890.[18][19]

Her obituary was published on 2 Oct 1890:

PULFORD.-On the 1st October, at the residence
of her son-in-law (Mr. M. McLeish), Miller-street,
North Unley, the beloved wife of Edwin Pulford, aged
72 years. Her end was peace.[20]

Research Notes

  • She is most likely the daughter of William Haywood and Lucy Woodley. They married in Hungerford, Berkshire where Lucy was born.[21][22]
    • William and Lucy started their family in Berkshire, but then moved to Suffolk. They are found in Rickinghall in the 1841-1871 census.[23]
