Biography

Hannah was born in 1886, and her birth registered in Taree.[1] She is the daughter of John Haydon and Hannah Kilmore. [2]

1926 May 5 - Mrs. P. H. Murray, of Hannan Vale (nee Miss H. Haydon), who before her marriage recently was a music, teacher at Lansdowne, has received a handsome cake stand from her ex-pupils. The present, which was sent along by Misses Gladys and Hessie Smith, was accompanied by a letter wishing her happiness in her new sphere and thanking her for the splendid attention she had always given her pupils. The letter was signed by about 40 ex-pupils, and, with the cake stand, is being kept by Mrs. Murray as a cherished possession.[3] ¶And on page 5 same paper: THANKS. Mrs. P. H. Murray, Hannam Vale, wishes to thank her late pupils and their parents, of Lansdowne, for the beautiful silver cake stand she received as a presentation from them.

The only Haydon-Murray marriage I can find is for Hannah C. HAYDON and Patrick H. MURRAY in Sydney in 1926.[4] I can only presume this is 'our' Hannah.

1926 June 5 - Car Accident. Mr. P. H. Murray was returning home to Stewart’s River after the circus in Taro; last Monday night, when his car overturned at Paddy’s Creek, just beyond Oxley turn-off. A thick fog obscured his view of the road and the car hit the railing of a culvert. This deflected its course, and after running down an embankment it overturned in a couple of feet of water. Mrs. Murray, Mr. Haydon and a boy were in the car with Mr. Murray, but all escaped serious injury. A passing motorist picked them up and took tham to Coopernook Hotel, where warm dry clothes were provided and Dr. Macpherson consulted.[5]

When her father died in 1934, Hannah is shown as "Mrs. H. P. Murray (Kempsey".[6]

When her mother died in 1936, Hannah is listed as a surviving daughter, Mrs. H. Murray of Kempsey.[7] Note that all her sisters are listed using their husband's initial; for example; Margaret is listed as Mrs A. Kidd, her husband being Arthur.

1937 Dec 15 - Kempsey Police Court. Unlicensed Wireless Sets — 33 Fined. James David Lamond, Wireless License Inspector, proceeded against thirty-three owners of wireless receiving sets who had failed to obtain licenses for same. All of the parties charged pleaded guilty, and thirty-one were each fined £2, with 8/- costs of Court and 9/- expenses of witness. The defendants were:– […] Mrs Hannah Murray […] [8]

But from then on, I can find no records that I can happily say are her…

Research Notes

So, first question is regarding her mother's obituary. Is "H" for Hannah or her husband's initial? Perhaps her husband was more commonly known by his second given name, beginning with H? (It is a Haydon/Kidd habit to do this!) That would allow for "Patrick H" to become "Mrs H. P." in 1936.

But the enigma grows: She appears on a Haydon family tree at ancestrylibrary.com as: ¶Hannah C “Bub” HAYDON ¶Birth 1886 Taree ¶Death: 1973 Coffs Harbour, NSW ¶Spouse: unknown.[2]

However, I can find neither death registration, newspaper notice nor cemetery record to support the 1973 death date; in fact I have not been able to identify her in NSW from 1926 to 1990… Not as Haydon, Hayden nor Murray… And although there are any number of Patrick MURRAYs in NSW none recorded as living in Kempsey that I have found… And I can not find a second marriage as Hannah Murray to a new husband…. (it is only possible to search to 1951 in NSW)

I have found Hannah and Patrick Joseph HEydon (farmer) in Hume electorate, NSW in the electoral rolls for 1937, and Hannah alone in 1954… But, as well as Hannah not having her second initial, Joseph does not begin with 'H'…

Did they go interstate? to New Zealand like her sister? Did they have children?

1965 - Obituary of her brother William - lists his surviving sisters as "Mrs. M. Clarke (Sydney), Mrs. B. Burrows (East Kempsey), Mrs. N. KIDD (Sydney), Mrs S. Bligh (Coffs Harbour and Mrs. C. Lowe (Coffs Harbour)".[9]

From that I can only assume, as I can account for the other sisters, that Hannah had a second marriage to a Mr. Burrows and died after 1965… but I am still at a loss to account for her after that. Digitised newspapers are only good to about 1955; marriage registrations to 1951; death registrations to 1991 – but I can't find her in those, nor in cemetery transcription sites.
