Isabelle and Frederick lived in Jefferson Township, Owen County, Indiana where Frederick was a farmer.[1]
The account of her parents' journey to Iowa to "check up on that side of the family" says that Henry -- who was 13 at the time -- was to stay behind in Owen County, Indiana with Betsy's brothers, Jake and Meeny, and put in the 1863 crops. Henry's sisters, Isabell and Marilda, were staying behind to work as "mother's helpers" for some neighbors. The rest of the children -- Hamm (2), Lydia Jane (4), George (6), and Mary ("Polly") (8), all went with their parents.[2]
