Biography

There are multiple Abner Hatfield’s amongst the descendants of George Hatfield Jr but the source records seem to only fit this one. Nevertheless the records cover multiple states so errors in this biography are entirely possible.

Abner was apparently married twice. His first wife was Sarah (Sally), whose last name was believed to be Pugh. Sarah was believed to be the daughter of William Pugh (Pugh-1012) & Frances Townsend (Townsend-2587) and was born on 29 September 1814 in Lee County, Virginia. It is believed that Abner and Sarah married on 29 May 1829 in Claiborne County Tennessee. Where the date/location came from is unknown as no marriage record has been found. If true then Sarah was 14 when she and Abner married. US Census Records show their children were:

• Lynch born between 1827 and 1833 in Tennessee married 2nd cousin Hettie Hatfield.
• Catherine born about 1836 in Tennessee and was 1st wife of 2nd cousin Greenberry Hatfield.
• George about 1837 in Tennessee.
• Frances (Franky) born about 1839 in Tennessee.
• Mary born about 1841 in Tennessee.
• Elizabeth born about 1843 in Tennessee.
• Susannah born about 1845 in Tennessee.
• Sarah born about 1849 in Tennessee.

Abner apparently divorced Sarah (Sally) and married Susannah Dilling, born 1832 in Tennessee. Again, no marriage record exists but US Census, death records & other records do exist. The 1860 US Federal Census for Claiborne County, Tennessee shows Sally living with Frances, Elizabeth, Susannah and young Sarah.

Abner and Susannah had the following children:

• Riley S. (about 1851 Indiana-1875 Indiana).
• Isaac born about 1855 in Indiana.
• Richard born about 1856 in Indiana.
• Mahlon born about 1859 in Indiana.
• James F. (1860 Indiana-1942 Indiana). Married 1) Margaret (Maggie) Glenn & 2) Florence Davis.
• Abner born about 1863 in Indiana.
• William born about 1864 in Indiana.
• Mercerva born about 1868 in Indiana.
• John M. born November 1870 in Indiana.
• Margaret S. born about 1873 in Indiana.

Abner joined the 83rd Indiana Infantry—Union on 18 Aug 1862 and was discharged on 31 Jan 1863. On 8 March 1880 Abner filed for an invalid pension. On 25 Aug 1883 Susannah filed for a widow’s pension. She filed from Indiana. On 21 April 1891 Sarah filed for a widow’s pension from Tennessee. There is a notation for Sarah that looks like “Const. Wid.” when the term for divorcee is supposed to be “grass widow”.

Abner died on 28 March 1833 in Indiana. His tombstone states that he was 64 years, 11 months & 28 days old at the time of death. This would mean he was born in April of 1819.
