Simon Alexander Haley was a professor of agriculture, and father of author Alex Haley.

Birth

Simon Alexander Haley was born to Alex Haley and Victoria (Jackson) Haley, on 8 Mar 1892[1][2][3].

Early Life

On 1 June 1900 in Savannah, Hardin, Tennessee, Simon Haley, age 8 was living with his parents Alec, age 55 and Queen, age 42. He had four siblings.[4]

On 2 May 1910 in Civil District 4, Hardin, Tennessee. He was attending school at age 17 and also working as a laborer on a general farm, but had been out of work for last five weeks[5].

In the 1920 census Simon (age 27) was the single brother of Abner Haley in Corinth, Alcorn, Mississippi, United States. Their mother Queen was also enumerated with them, and Abner's wife and three children.[6]

Simon married George Bertha Palmer on 28 Sep 1920 in Lauderdale, Tennessee, United States.[7]

Military

Simon A Haley enlisted into the 366th Infantry Regiment[8] on 26[2] or 28 Apr 1918[3][9].He was discharged from the army on 19 Mar 1919[2].

Later Years

After the death of his first wife, Simon (age 40) married Zeona E Hatcher (age 25) on 12 Sep 1932 in Madison, Alabama, United States.[10] They had one daughter, Lois Ann.[11] The marriage ended in divorce in 1950.[12]

In 1940, Simon Haley age 48 was living with his son George while living in Vaugine Township, Jefferson, Arkansas[13]

In the 1950 census Simon (age 58), Agri Teacher, was a divorced lodger in Jefferson, Jefferson, Arkansas, United States.[14]

Simon (age 58) married Willette E Jeffries (age 51) on 19 Aug 1950 in Jefferson, Arkansas, United States.[15] They divorced in 1954.[16]

Death

Simon Alexander Haley died 19 Aug 1973[1][17][2][3] in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, West Virginia, at age 81.

Burial

He was buried on 27 Aug 1973[3], at the Little Rock National Cemetery, in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, USA. The gravestone is located in Section 16, site 1429[18][3].
