Biography

Leonarda Grizzaffi is born and baptized 24 December 1846. She is the daughter of Liborio Grizzaffi and Antonia Cutropia. Her godparents are Vincenzo Paternostro and Maria, his sister.

Her father, Liborio, dies at age 45 (reportedly age 40) on 29 June 1851.

Biagio Buccheri's age in 1886 when his twin sons are born is given as 69, for an estimated birth year of 1817.

Leonarda and Vincenzo have at least seven children: Castrenze (1871), Bernarda Bisanzio (1874), Mercurio (1877), Anna (1880), Giuseppe (1883), twin sons Vincenzo and Liborio (1886), and Serafina (unknown). Their first two children are born out of wedlock.

Castrenze is born and baptized Castrensem on 27 June 1871. This baptismal record indicates that his parents, Blasio Buccheri and Leonarda Grizzaffi, are not married when he is born. His godfather is the unmarried Antoninus lo Bello.

Bernarda Bisanzio is born on 1 November 1874, and baptized the next day as Bernardam Bisanzio Projetta, Projetta being a name given to foundlings in Corleone at this time. Her godmother is Lucia Pomara.

In a note below this record, dated 25 November 1874, Bernarda is identified as the daughter of Biagio Buccheri and Leonarda Grizzaffi.

Biagio and Leonarda marry on 16 February 1876. Leonarda's father has died by this time, and her mother is living.

Mercurio is born 22 September 1877 and baptized the next day as Mercurium, named after his paternal grandfather. His godfather is Vincentius La Barbera, who is unmarried.

Bernarda dies on 25 May 1878 at three years and six months of age.

Anna is born 6 August 1880 and baptized Annam the next day. Her godparents are Joseph la Barbera and Anna Maria Amari, who is unmarried.

Giuseppe is born on 31 May 1883 and baptized 3 June as Joseph. His godparents are Josephus la Barba and Catherina Battaglia.

A margin note on this baptismal record says that Giuseppe marries in New York, at 447 East 115th St., on 11 January 1917 with Nunzia Salerno, daughter of Nicolo' Salerno and Giuseppa Colletti of Corleone.

Twins Vincenzo and Liborio are born 21 March 1886 at 55 via Cammarata in Corleone. Vincenzo is born 15 minutes earlier, at 11:15 AM. Liborio is named after his maternal grandfather.

Both of the witnesses at the births of Vincenzo and Liborio are named Cascio: Leoluca Cascio is 49 (b. 1837), falegname (joiner/carpenter) (maybe this Leoluca), and Antonino Cascio is 40 (b. 1846), also a falegname.

Vincenzo dies at five months of age on 20 August 1886.

Castrenze marries Lucia Profita on 13 September 1891. Leonarda and Biagio are still living at this time.

Leonarda's mother, Antonina, dies at age 84 (b. 1813) on 4 November 1897.

Mercurio marries Francesca Napoli on 29 April 1907. This marriage contains a dispensation, required due to second degree consanguinity.^[1]

Leonarda's husband Biagio dies on September 15, 1909. Leonarda survives him.^[2]

A margin note on the baptismal record of Isidore Damiano says Isidore marries Serafina in New York at the Chiesa Santa Lucia on 23 October 1910.^[3]
