William Greenleaf was born in 1768 in Pownalborough, Lincoln, Massachusetts Bay Colony. The towns of Dresden and Alna were later split off from Pownalborough, and in 1802 the town name was changed to Wiscasset. William's parents were Joseph and Dorcas (Gray) Greenleaf. [1] He was baptized October 16, 1768. [2] His surname is sometimes spelled Greenlief, and the local pronunciation of the name sounds like "Grenlef".
William's father Joseph died in 1772, and his mother Dorcas married Moses Hilton in 1781, in Wiscasset. William went to Starks about 1782, most likely with his older brothers Joshua and John and John's wife Anna, who were married in 1781 and also appear in Starks. Their mother Dorcas remained in Wiscasset.
William is listed on the 1790 census as living alone, residing in Sandy River from Mouth to Cass Plantation, which was incorporated as Starks in 1795. The next name on the census is Joshua Greenleaf, and also living alone.[3]
William married Sally Lander, per the Greenleaf genealogy.[1] They were probably married about 1794, based on the birth of their first child in 1795. They have ten children listed on page 76 of Starks, Maine vital records. [4]
William "Greenlief" apprears on the 1800 census a few entries down from his father-in-law Joseph Lander.[15] He appears on the 1810 census listed next to his brother Joseph.[16]
William died on 16 September 1817, in Starks,[1] leaving ten children, including a three-month-old son.
