Research Notes

One of the profiles merged into this profile (which showed incorrect parents John Green and Elizabeth Green) was based on a book that has been proven to have numerous errors. (See Shawnee Heritage Fraud and 9/01/07 Version: Bedsole History from 1700, with List of Ancestors and Descendants Green Family Old Home Place Barbour County Alabama.)

Griffith Griffin removed as a child since he did not exist and fictitiously created.

The original Griffin-4126 record had a birth year of 1700. Someone should investigate this discrepancy further.

I'd like to share the following in hopes of gathering feedback. My understanding is the Mary Green who married Richard Griffin was not the daughter of Filmer Green. My understanding is her father is John Green. The following is from an attachment to my tree. There are some graphics that won't transfer well as text but it think the points are still made:

(originally attached to my tree an Ancestry 07 Jun 2014)

Mary Green wife of Richard Griffin The following information was gathered in September 2013 from correspondence with Nancy Kessler [email address removed] .

°Mary Green married Richard Griffin °Mary Green had a brother Henry

°Henry, brother of Mary, brother in law to Richard Griffin died in Lunenburg County VA, in 1748 and it is his will that establishes the above.

Mary Green married to Richard Griffin can NOT be the daughter of Filmer Green and Mary Walker nor a descendant of Thomas the Seagull Green and Martha Filmer. When Henry Green died 1748 Lunenburg Co.,Va, he appointed his BROTHER-lN-LAW Richard Griffin and his son John Green as Executors of his estate. In Henry Green's will he also mentions Abigail Green wife of his dec'd brother John Green.

This Henry Green (wifeElizabeth) is NOT the son of Filmer Green nor is this Henry Green a descendant of Thomas "TheSeagull' Green.

A Green male cousin who is a direct descendant of Henry and Elizabeth Green of Lunenburg Co.,VA and this cousin did DNA testing with FamilytreeDNA.

Background:

The following post lead me to contacting Nancy Kessler to learn more about the line of ancestry of the Green descendant that the following is based on (per comments she left in response).

I have been working on Green DNA matches trying to match up the early Green families in Virginia and North Carolina. Recently I found a descendent of Filmer Green (b.1741) who was the son of William Green (b.c1709) who married Amy Clay and lived in Amelia County. William Green (b.01709) was the son of Thomas Green (b. c1666) who is known as "The Seagull". The descendent is named Thomas Green and his DNA did not match any other Green on the FamilyTreeDNA.com website under the "GreenProject".

My ancestor is ThomasGreen (1760-1822) who came from Orange County, North Carolina. I have my ancestor's DNA test results and he does not match the "Seagull" family. My ancestor Thomas Green (1760-1822) does match a number of other Greens, including descendents of John Green (b.1751), Elijah Green (b.1752) and William Green (b.1762) all who came from Orange County, North Carolina. He also matches the family of William Green (b. c1742) of Barnwell County, South Carolina. I am looking for other male "Greens" to take the Y-DNA test.

Below is an excerpt of the information from Nancy per the Green DNA project. This is intended to substantiate the above while still respecting the privacy of those tested.

There was 3 different male Green descendants of Henry Green Sr (of Lunenburg Co., VA) and wife Elizabeth unknown who did DNA testing — they did NOT know each other before taking the test - one was from the Mid-West, one from NC around the old ancestral home area (as understand) and not sure where the other one was from but got the idea he was also on the East Coast.

Their line of descent starts out the same Henry Green b:1700 married Elizabeth Unknown b:1700 Virgina

Stephen Green b:1728 married Jemima Scott b:1733 North Carolina

Martin Green b:1762 married Francis Gentry b:1762 North Carolina

then the lines split from there with 2 DNA matches who descend from their son Martin Gentry Green and the 3rd line descends from Martin Green and Frances Gentry’s son William Green (see outlines below)

Martin Green b:1762 married Francis Gentry b:1762 North Carolina

- son of Martin Green and Francis Gentry Martin Gentry Green b:1805 married Mary Ann Huguley b:1811 Ky

- son of Martin Green and Mary Ann Huguley Congrave Green b:1834 married Kate Mckinney Moberly b:1836 Kentucky

- son of Martin Green and Mary Ann Huguley Stephen Green b 1844 KY married Lucy Jane Douglas b 1857 KY

Another son of Martin Green and Mary Ann Gently: William Green b abt 1735 married Nancy Barnes b abt 1735 (parents of)

Franklin Green b abt 1818 married Elizabeth Fray b abt 1818 (parents of)

Wm A Green b abt 1844 M0 married Isabelle Magruder b1848 M0

. . . As far as I can tell, you are a Griffin/Green researcher, so I am not sure how familiar you are with the Green lines that were in the early VA counties of Lunenburg, Mecklenburg etc — there were quite a few Greens — some of which can be linked together as family and some that can’t—unfortunatel your John and Henry Green are part of the ones that can’t be linked to the others in the area—Henry Green’s will is the only thing that we have that gave us a clue (copy of will below)

Will of Henry Green (I) Oct15,1748 DeedBook1,Pages477-8

In the name of God Amen I Henry Green of the County of Lunenburg being in sound & perfect health of mind tho in low and weakly state of body do make & constitute this my last will & testament desireing & intending hereby to dispose of such worldly goods as it has pleas'd almighty God to bless me with in form and manner following Towit.

lmprimis I give and bequeath unto my eldest son John Green the plantation where on he now lives to include with the said Plantation one hundred and fifty seven acres which said tracts o to be laid off I give unto my said Son John & to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever.

Item I give an bequeath unto my second son Henry Green the like quantity of an Hundred and Fifty Seven acres of land to include the Plantation where on Abigail Green relict of my brother John Green now lives which said tracts o laid off I give unto my said son Henry & the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forevermore.

Item I lend unto my beloved Wife Elizabeth Green during her Widowhood the remaining one hundred and fifty seven acres of land including the Plantation whereon I now live and in case my said Wife dies or marry I give the said tract unto my youngest son Richard Green and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten forever.

Item my will & desire is that all my personal estate remain in possession of my beloved Wife as long as she shall live unmarried and after her death or marriage that it be equally distributed amongst my children excluding my sons John & Henry and my daughter Dorcas who are already sufficiently provided for.

And it is my will and desire that my brother in law Richard Griffin & my son John Green do act as, and I do hereby constitute and appoint them executors of this my last will & testament and do declare all other wills null and void. In witness where of I have here unto set my hand & seal this fifteenth day of October in the year of our Lord MDCCXLVIII

June7,2014 Side note: My research is on going as to the father of Richard Griffin, husband to Mary Green. It seems the conclusion can be reached that Richard is the son of a William Griffin, as the connections are documented by the following research:

Of particular note are the witnesses to the will of William Griffin, and how similar the set is to those shown above on the will of Henry Green.

Executors-Ralf Griffin and William Woodward. Executrix- my wife. Signed Oct 17,1750- William Griffin (-0 his mark) Witnesses- William Jackson, William Sizmore, Charles Smith The within will of the deceased was exhibited at Apr 2,1751Court, and was proved by the oaths of the witnesses.

It says Mary Green married in 1714 to Richard Griffin? If she was born 1703,

Little confused with this information on profile, it says that Mary Green married in 1714 to Richard Griffin and had children: Mary Griffin; John Griffin (b: 27 Jan 1726/27 in Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, Virginia) and M. Owen Griffin (b: 1745 in Lunenburg Co, Virginia). Marriage Abt 1719. Virginia.

Looks like the biography is incorrect. The dates in the profile look correct.
