My observations: For 30 years my ancestor John Baucom, husband of Rachel Barker was thought to be the son of Nicholas and Mary born in 1725 in Baltimore, MD. My Y DNA project proved my John Baucom was no kin to Nicholas. This Nicholas attended Anglican (English) churches, gave English names to his children (N0 Otto, Fritz, Heidi, etc), which also is a clue to the German myth.
How can you merge people without having all the facts, such as Nicholas Jr could not have been born 1n 1732, he was still a minor when his father died as shown in the court records found on the previous website.

He married his first wife, Mary about 1720/24 3. May I ask what documentation you have on this, please. I can not find any ship (prior to 1917) named Fatherland. I have contacted several places in Germany (including the Heidelberg University) and can not find any referance to a ship by this name nor a family by the name of Baucom (any spelling of Baucom...Von Baucom, Von Balkom, Von Balkum, no spelling.) Any help in finding any kind of documentation on this would be greatly appreciated. Sandra

I have searched the internet (including online books and other materials) and read lots of posts and other folks' Ancestry trees, but I can't find anything except the Upchurch book (which I have) that ties the New Amsterdam Vandegrifts with the Baucoms. I really question whether Susannah even existed--and I mostly discount the whole Von Bakum ships thing. Have you found anything new on this since 2004? I would appreciate any help you can provide. (I do have a small ulterior motive in this area, as I descend from the Verkerks myself. Thus, if Susanna Vandegrift really was a daughter of Nicholas Vandegrift and Berentje Verkerk, then my wife and I would be cousins!).
