Biography

Pauline Steen Scarlett was born Nov. 4, 1924, the daughter of James Bolen and Frances Jane Hickman Gray. She grew up with three sisters and three brothers.

She married Carey Steen in 1942. They lived on a farm in the Canaan community of Searcy County and raised two children, Phillip and Pamela.

In addition to her duties on the dairy farm, she was employed as a nurse assistant at the Williams Medical Clinic and Hospital in Marshall. This began her lifetime of caring for people, using the skills she had learned there. Carey passed away at age 61, losing his battle with cancer.

Years later she married Clifford Scarlett, and moved to Berryville, Ark. There she worked for Tyson Inc., for several years and eventually retired. A few years later Clifford passed away, and Pauline returned to the family farm, where she spent the remainder of her life.

Sadly, over a period of years, she lost both of her children to cancer. Being the resilient person that she was, she overcame her hardships by helping others. Her last few years were spent caring for her dear friend Glen Pack. She became very close to his entire family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, all six siblings, husbands Carey Steen and Clifford Scarlett, daughter Pamela Elliott and husband Bentley, son Phil Steen and infant granddaughter Carrie Steen.

She is survived by granddaughter Angie Smith and family, husband Tom and children Justin and Sara; grandson John Steen; and step-children Sharoyn Kiddy, James Scarlett and Ernie Scarlett, wife Rita and two daughters. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Linda Steen and step-grand-children Jill Roach and Jeff Jennings and their families, James Elliott, and wife Wendy and three daughters.

Pauline passed away Jan. 27, 2010, in her home at the age of 85. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren and friends that will dearly miss her. She was a Christian and member of First Baptist Church of Marshall.
