Biography

Martha Louvina Gillespie (see research note re: Middle Name) was born about 1837 in Tazewell County, Virginia (see research note re: Birth) to Henry Harman Gillespie and Nancy Bailey Harman[1][2].

It is likley that Martha's mother had passed away before the enumeration of the 1850 U.S. Federal Census (see research note on her mother's profile). In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Martha was enumerated in the household of her uncle (mother's brother), James B. Harman, in Tazewell County, Virginia. One of Martha's brothers, James Floyd Gillespie, was also in this household[3].

In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Martha was enumerated in her father's household in Tazewell County, Virginia. Also in the household were Martha's brothers, John and Henry Gustavus[4].

On 15 January 1861 in Tazewell County, Virginia, Martha married John Mandon Harman. John was born 10 February 1837 in Tazewell County, Virginia, to Daniel Camel Harman and Margaret Gillespie[1]. Martha and John were related to each other via at least three paths:

  1. They were 2nd cousins once removed. John's father's father (Daniel Camel Harman, Mathias Harman), and Martha's father's mother's mother (Henry Harman Gillespie, Rhoda Harman, Christina Harman) were siblings, both children of Daniel Harman Sr. and Anna Bughsen.
  2. They were 3rd cousins once removed two different ways, descending from Heinrich Adam Herrmann and Louisa Katrina Mathias. John's father's father's father (Daniel Camel Harman, Mathias Harman, Daniel Harman Sr.) and Martha's 2x GGF Henry Harman Sr. were siblings, but Martha descends from that 2xGGF two different ways:

In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Martha and her husband lived in Tazewell County, Virginia. Also in their household were three children, and Ballard Harman, the brother of Martha's husband[5]. In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Martha and her husband contined living in Tazewell County, Virginia, now with six children, and brother-in-law Ballard[6].

In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Martha and her husband continued to live in Tazewell County, Virginia. Also in their household were two of their children[7]. In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, Martha, her husband, and the same two children continued to live in Tazewell County, Virginia[8].

Martha and John had ten children together (see research note re: Children):

  1. Margaret A. (Harman) Harman b. ~1866 d. 1957[9][10]
  2. Alice Augusta (Harman) Gillespie b. 1867 d. 1953[11][12][13]
  3. Sally Johnson (Harman) Harman b. ~1869 d. 1956[14][15]
  4. Thomas Tyler Harman b. 1871 d. 1959[16]
  5. John F. Harman b. ~1874 d. 1936[17]
  6. Rebecca S. (Harman) Jones b. 1877 d. 1932[18][19]
  7. Henry Edward Harman b. 1878 d. 1879[20]
  8. Edie Jane (Harman) Mitchell b. ~1881 d. ???[21]
  9. Parcilla Harman b. ??? d. ???[22]
  10. Nannie Harman b. ??? d. ???[23]

Martha was about 75 years old when she passed away. She died on 5 August 1912 at Clear Fork, Tazewell County, Virginia. Her death certificate indicates that she was buried the next day, but only provided Tazewell as the location[2]. It seems likely that she was buried on her family's property, but evidence of a grave has not yet been documented.

Research Notes

Middle Name

Records for Martha use a number of different spellings for her middle name:
  1. Lavinia - 1860 U.S. Federal Census[4].
  2. Louvenia - 1880 U.S. Federal Census[6].
  3. Louvina - her death certificate[2].
  4. Lovela - death certificate of her daughter, Rebecca[19].
  5. Lovena - death certificate of her daughter, Alice[13].
  6. Luvenia - "Harman Genealogy", when she is named as the wife of John within the description of John's ancestors[24].
  7. Vena - death certificate for daughter, Sally[15].
  8. Venie - death certificate for son, Thomas[16].
  9. Viena - 1870 U.S. Federal Census[5].

Birth

A birth record for Martha has not yet been located. Other sources provide evidence for when and where she was born:
  • About 1836 in Virginia - the 1850 and 1880 U.S. Federal Censuses[3][6].
  • October 1836 in Virginia - the 1900 U.S. Federal Census[7].
  • 30 October 1836 in Tazewell County, Virginia - her death certificate[2].
  • About 1837 in Virginia - the 1870 and 1910 U.S. Federal Censuses[5][8].
  • 31 October 1837 in Tazewell County, Virginia - computed from the age given on her marriage record (23 years, 2 months, 15 days on 15 January 1861)[1].
  • About 1838 in Virginia - the 1860 U.S. Federal Census[4].

Children

Because Martha and her husband John were related to each other, they are mentioned twice as a couple within "Harman Genealogy (southern branch) with biographical sketches, 1700 - 1924" - once within the description of Martha's ancestors, and once within the description of John's ancestors. Within each description, a list of Martha and John's children are provided, but unfortunately those two lists of children do not exactly match.
When Martha and John are described within Martha's family, seven children are named[25]:
  1. Margaret
  2. Alice
  3. Sallie
  4. Rebecca
  5. Tyler
  6. John
  7. Parcilla
When Martha and John are described within John's family, nine children are named[24]:
  1. Margaret A.
  2. Alice
  3. T. Tyler
  4. Sallie J.
  5. Rebecca S.
  6. John F.
  7. Edie J.
  8. Edward
  9. Nannie
These two lists agree on six names, but collectively between them there are a total of ten names. Both the 1900[7] and 1910[8] U.S. Federal Censuses indicate that Martha was the mother to ten children, with only seven surviving. The presumption is that both individual lists of children within "Harman Genealogy"' were not complete lists, and that all ten names are children of Martha.
