Henry Gillespie served in the United States Civil War. Side: CSA Regiment(s): 45th Virginia Infantry
Henry Harman Gillespie[1] was born on 30 July 1813 in Tazewell County, Virginia (see research note re: Birth) to John Gillespie and Rhoda Harmon[2].
On 3 April 1834 (see research note re: Marriage Date), Henry married Nancy B. Harman in Tazewell County, Virginia[3]. Henry and Nancy were related to each other via at least two paths:
Henry's wife Nancy likely passed away prior to the enumeration of the 1850 U.S. Federal Census (see research note on Nancy's profile). Their four children were enumerated in the household of Nancy's parents or brothers. Neither Henry nor Nancy have been located in the 1850 census. Henry and Nancy had at least four children together:
In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Henry and three of his children were enumerated in Tazewell County, Virginia[9].
On 29 May 1861, in Wytheville, Wythe, Virginia, Henry enlisted into the Confederate Army with a rank of Private. He served in Company H of the 45th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. He served as a teamster. On 10 September 1861, Henry's regiment participated in the Battle of Carnifex Ferry. Henry was discharged on 25 October 1861 in Fayette County, Virginia due to an unnamed disability[10][11].
On 12 February 1862 in Tazewell County, Virginia, Henry married Saluda Raines[2].
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Henry and Saluda lived in McDowell County, West Virginia. Also in their household were four of their children[12]. In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Henry and Saluda continued living in McDowell County, West Virginia, now with six children[13].
In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, Henry and Saluda lived in Tazewell County, Virginia. Also in their household were four children, and Saluda's sister[14].
Henry and Saluda had at least seven children together:
Henry was a couple months shy of 90 years old when he passed away. He died on 13 April 1903 at Horsepen, Tazewell County, Virginia (see research note re: Death)[1][22]. Henry is buried in Horsepen Church of Christ Cemetery, located in Tazewell County, Virginia[22].
Research Notes
Birth
A birth record for Henry has not yet been located. Other sources provide evidence of when and where he was born:
About 1813 in Tazewell County, Virginia - from the record of his second marriage[2].
July 1813 in Virginia - from the 1900 U.S. Federal Census[14].
About 1815 in Virginia - from the 1880 U.S. Federal Census[13].
About 1817 in Virginia - from the 1860 U.S. Federal Census[9].
About 1819 in Virginia - from the 1870 U.S. Federal Census[12].
In Tazewell County, Virginia - from the Death Certifcate of son James Floyd Gillespie[7].
In Schrader, Virginia (today this would be Schrader, Kanawha County, West Virginia) - from the Death Certificate of daughter Josephine (Gillespie) Presley[16].
Marriage Date
Henry's marriage to Nancy is noted within John Newton Harman's "Harman Genealogy (southern branch) with biographical sketches, 1700 - 1924", but unfortunately the date of their marriage is incorrect within that publication. "Harman Genealogy" indicates that Henry and Nancy were married on 22 May 1834[23]. However, examining the Tazewell County marriage records (digital image hosted by FamilySearch), the marriage date for Martha and Henry is actually 3 April 1834[3]. In that image, on the very next line, the date of 22 May 1834 appears, but there are no names on that line. It seems that the second date was used by mistake in "Harman Genealogy".
Death
A death record for Henry has yet to be located. These other sources provide evidence of Henry's death:
Henry's second wife applied for Virginia's pension for widows of Confederate soldiers. That application was submitted on 20 April 1905, and it indicates that Henry died in April of 1903 (a specific day was not provided) in Horsepen, Tazewell County, Virginia[1].
Henry's grave marker indicates that he passed away on 13 April 1903[22].
Henry's Find-a-Grave memorial, which includes a photo of his grave marker, uses a different date of death than what is inscribed on his grave marker - without explanation. His Find-a-Grave memorial indicates he died on 30 April 1903[22].
