Biography

Sisley Gillam was born about 1770 to Charles Gillam and Jemima Harris.[1] She married John Rodgers about 1790, probably in Laurens County, South Carolina.

On 4 July 1791, her husband received a grant of 313 acres on Beard’s Fork of Duncan’s Creek of the Enoree River in Laurens County, South Carolina. They both leased this land to Thomas Wadsworth and William Turpin for one year on 18 February 1795 for £20.10.0.[2]

John Rodgers died in the early part of 1818 in Laurens District, South Carolina. On 13 May 1818, Sisley Rodgers was granted letters of administration on his estate with William Rodgers and James Cook as her bondsmen. His personal estate was appraised by William Rodgers, Samuel Goodman, and Obadiah Micham on 23 May 1818 and valued at $68.62. The sale took place on 28 May 1818 and realized $225.19.[3]

In 1820, she and her children sold their interest in the estate of John Rodgers.[4][5]

On 12 September 1822, she and her older children signed off on the selling of her father-in-law’s estate. They were described as “Sisley Rodgers widow of John Rodgers, Dec’d, and we the heirs of the said Rodgers Hiram Culbeson and Rebecca his wife - Elihue, Sheillton, and Anna Rodgers heirs of the said John Rodgers, Dec’d, son of Andrew Rodgers, Dec’d.”[6]

She was still living on 6 June 1832 when she sold 126 acres to her son Willis B. Rodgers for $10.00.[7]
