John was born in 1838 in South Carolina. He is the son of Jeremiah Gilliam and Sarah Wood. [1][2] He married Bithena Young.
They had eight children. [3] John died in 1922 in Alabama. [4]

April 1862 • 50th Alabama Company A
Enlisted first time for 12 months. Reenlisted Company A 50th Alabama Infantry Regiment April, 1862 at Corinth, Mississippi. Captured at Resaca, Georgia October, 1864. Paroled at Alexandia, Alabama June, 1865.[5][6][7]
