Biography

Israel was born in 1831. He was the son of Thomas Gillam-797 and Frances Furner.

Israel (Full age, Farmer) married Susannah Oakley on 9 Apr 1856 at the Parish Church, Westbury, Tasmania. ^[1]

DEATH OF MR. I. GILLAM.

On Monday evening a few minutes before 10 o'clock Mr. Israel Gillam, of the Black Hills, Westbury, passed away, after an illness of about eight weeks. The deceased, who was the third and a twin son of the late Mr. Thomas Gillam, was a native of Tasmania, and 75 years of age. He came into the Westbury district when only five years old, and remained a resident up to the time of his death. The name of Gillam was well known throughout the north of Tasmania. His twin brother, Joseph Gillam, died about 36 years ago. The original family of Gillams consisted of William, James, Joseph, Israel, and Edward, all of whom have now passed away. There were also several daughters, two only remaining, viz., Mrs. Burns, of Westbury, and Mrs. Dawson (widow), who resides with her son in the St. Mary's district.

The deceased was always engaged in farming pursuits, and hence he was familiarly known as Farmer Gillam. His wife, who was a daughter of the late Mr. Judd Oakley, predeceased him about six years. The family consisted of 14 children, eight of whom are dead, leaving five sons and one daughter, all grown up. The deceased at one time resided on the farm now owned and occupied by Mr. J. Lockhart, and subsequently he had Tilina, both in the Westbury district. About 36 years ago he removed to the Black Hills, where he remained to the end.

The late Mr. Israel Gillam, although of a very retiring disposition, made many friends and no enemies. Every one had a good word for Farmer Gillam, he being a man much admired for his straight forwardness and honesty of purpose. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family. The funeral will take place tomorow.

His parents changed the surname to Gillam on arrival in Tasmania
