Florence Edith Gillam was born on 09 Mar 1901^[1] in Crows Nest, Queensland, Australia as the second child of Arthur Gillam and Lizzie Dorries. She had seven siblings, namely: Vada May a twin, William John, Frederick Walter, Amy Isabella, Emily Maude, Alfred Charles, and John Arthur.

Florence Edith Gillam appeared on the Electoral Roll in 1926 living at Queen Street, Crow's Nest. She carried out home duties and most likely lived with her parents.

When she was 27, she married John Roy Russell, son of William George Russell and Ellen Jane Schwartz, on 14 Mar 1928^[2] in Annandale, New South Wales, Australia.
