Biography

Henry was baptised 15 Jul 1832 at St. Mary the Virgin, Elham, Kent[1]. Parents Henry and Esther.

He married Susannah Vanderburgh, daughter of Isaac and Eliza Vanderburgh. She was born 2 Feb 1836 in Ontario. Her father was born in the United States of German descent, while her mother was born in Ireland. Eliza Vanderburgh was living with Susannah and her children in 1881, aged 82.

The 1861 census records for King Township, York County, Ontario show that Henry Gillham, age 29, farmer, b. England, Susan Gillham, age 25, b. Canada W, living next to Isaac Vandiburg [sic], 68, gentleman, b. United States and Eliza Vandiburg [sic], 50, b. Ireland. Alfred, age 5 and Mark, age 3.

In 1871, Henry Gillham, farmer, 38, b. England, Susan, 35, Alfred, 15, Mark, 12, Arthur, 9, Celina, 6, Maria, 4, Louisa, 1 and Eliza Vanderburg, 72, b. Ireland. were residing in King Township, York County, Ontario.

In 1881, Henry Gillham, farmer, 48, b. England, Susannah, 45, Mark, farmer, 22, Arthur, 19, Celina, 16, Maria, 13, Annie, 2 and Eliza Vandeburg, widow, 82, b. Ireland. were residing in King Township, York County, Ontario.

Family tradition has it that Henry came out from England as a young man and started to work for Mr Vanderburgh on his farm in concession 5 in King Township. He eventually married the daughter Susannah and inherited the farm. Then he sent to England for his brother George.

Henry died 5 Mar 1887 and is buried in the All Saints Anglican Church Cemetery in King City.

In 1891, Susannah, age 55, was living with her youngest daughter Annie, age 12. In 1901, the same living arrangement was still in effect.

Susannah died 18 Apr 1906 and is buried with her husband.

  6. Louisa, b. 1870, d. 28 Jun 1878 of diptheria, bur. with her parents.
  7. Agnes Jane, b. 1877, d. 20 Feb 1877 of bronchitis, bur. with her parents.
  8. Edith Maria, b. 4 Nov 1887, d. 4 Nov 1887 of malnutrition, bur. with her parents.
  9. Annie, b. 1 Mar 1879, m. 4 Mar 1902, William John Perkins, son of Samuel and Margaret (Sinclair) Perkins; res. Ottawa in 1911, res. 14 Ossington Ave, Ottawa in 1921, d. 1973, aged 94, bur. with her husband in Ottawa.

Gillham-133 and Gilham-543 appear to represent the same person because: Using surname spelling on baptism record and early censuses. His father was not Thomas, two separate families have been confused (one Henry born Elham, the other Waltham).
